PlayOn Video-Streaming App Comes to the Wii August 26, 2009

Filed under: First Look, News — hey_suburbia @ 8:40 am

Play-On-Wii

Ever since gaming consoles decided to connect to broadband, a slew of companies have popped up offering plug-ins to expand your gaming system to do much more than play games. One of those companies is Media Mall, maker of the PlayOn plug-in.

Up until now, PlayOn has made it possible to access Netflix Watch Instantly, Amazon VOD, and Hulu from your PS3 or Xbox 360. Tomorrow they port to the Nintendo Wii.

PlayOn for Wii works much in the same way as it does for the other game systems — the $40 app streams Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and a few other online video portals from your Windows XP or Vista computer to the Wii plugged into your TV.

Tomorrow’s launch will be a beta, so expect a few hiccups. A 14-day free trial helps you decide whether this is the best solution for you.

Nintendo Patents Wii Motion Plus Football Controller

ninfb5 523x600 Nintendo Patents Wii Motion Plus Football Controller

A recently filed patent application by Howard Cheng, Vice President of Research and Development at Nintendo of America, reveals a plan for a soft football controller for use with the Wii and the remote.

Throwing – Players firmly strap their hands to the ball and make a throwing motion. The pitch angle and force of the throw determines the trajectory arc of the throw. Side to side motion determines the yaw angle. Pressing buttons on the Wii remote can adjust other options.

Running – The football controller sense body motion, shifting left and right to dodge tacklers and even jumping motions by raising the ball. Running speed is determined by players making a jogging motion.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade – New Trailer

Filed under: First Look, Videos — hey_suburbia @ 1:49 pm

77607 1 Muramasa: The Demon Blade New Trailer

Muramasa follows the story of Kisuke, a fugitive who has lost his memory, including that of a crime that he committed and Momohime, a lithe female ronin possessed by a dark spirit. Gameplay allows players to use the Wii Remote, the Classic controller and the Gamecube controller. The game allows players to use two different characters and features two difficulty levels.

Within its first week of release in Japan, Muramasa sold all of its shipped copies and reached the top Japan sales list.

Gameplay
The game has two different control methods, one that involves the Wii Remote and another that uses the Classic Controller, for players who prefer more precision.

Graphically the game is similar to Odin Sphere, retaining the same hand-drawn 2D art style, though inspiration was drawn from Japanese mythology and culture rather than Norse mythology. The game will have over 30 different stages.

Two playable characters have been specified: Kisuke, a young amnesiac ninja, and Momohime, a young princess of Narukami Han, Mino Province. Momohime starts off in the eastern Kyo and goes to the western Edo, while Kisuke goes the opposite direction. Both wield three katana out of 108 to collect and forge.

Swords are distinguished into two categories, tachi and ?dachi. ?dachi is bigger and deals more damage than Tachi, suitable for sweeping a group of weak foes, while Tachi has a shorter attack interval and is geared for aerial or high agility combat. Each sword has an ?gi, a powerful attack technique. Overuse of a sword (unleashing ?gi or defending) will deplete its “Soul Gauge” and eventually break it and its attack power will drop substantially. A broken sword will automatically recover itself when reserved for a short time.

The game can be played in three modes: Unmatched, Carnage, and Insane Death. Unmatched Mode focuses on character leveling as opposed to action, whereas Carnage Mode is more action-based, recommended for skilled players. Insane Death Mode is only available after a player clears the game in Unmatched Mode. This mode plays in the same fashion as Unmatched Mode but limits the player’s HP to 1 and will never grow when leveled up.

Setting
The game takes place during the Genroku era at the time of shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi on Honsh?, the main island of Japan. Because of his thirst for power, a conflict over immensely powerful swords, the Demon Blades, occurs. The swords are cursed and are said to bring tragedy, madness, and untimely deaths. As the chaos from the conflict spreads, creatures from the netherworld are summoned by these blades, along with Dragon and Demon Gods.

Story
Kisuke is a fugitive being chased for a crime he no longer remembers. His only desire is to find a certain katana. After defeating his arresters, he meets Yuzuruha who offers to guide his path. Meanwhile, Momohime, after being possessed by the soul of foul swordsman Jinkuro Izuna, is forced to flee her castle and accept Jinkuro’s offer to complete his plan.

The game was released Japan on April 9, 2009, and is set for release in North America on September 8, 2009, and in Europe in November 2009.

furry legends dsi fluffy Furry Legends Sneak onto DSiWare

Wojciech Piejko, from Gamelion Studios writes into WiiNintendo to say:

It is my pleasure to announce that we will be taking our beloved furballs to DSiWare. Furry Legends is no longer exclusive to WiiWare, the sneaky Furballs are expanding to DSiWare, and who knows if they will settle with just that!

In Furry Legends: Beginnings, which is a prequel to Furry Legends, players will be able to experience the world prior to squarie invasion. The game will feature beautiful, 100% hand drawn graphics, physics, puzzle, action and more!

You can expect new enemies, at least three different environments, new puzzles and a fresh dose of cheesy humor in this upcoming release. Remember to watch this space and sign up with our twitter feed to stay up to date with latest developments!

NyxQuest – New Trailer + New Reviews

Filed under: First Look, Reviews, Videos — hey_suburbia @ 9:30 am

77065 1 NyxQuest New Trailer + New Reviews

Nintendo Life – 95
A beautiful looking game which is also lots of fun to play. It’s true that it is not a massive game, you should be able to beat it 100% in just 3 hours, but those 3 hours will be completely filled with pure platforming bliss. This is exactly the sort of thing we want to see more of on WiiWare and comes highly recommended to all.

Vandal Online – 90
Over the Top Games has shown that it’s possible to develop excellent games with the relatively limited resources of WiiWare. It’s not just having an original and good idea, but also knowing how to make the best of the available resources.

Cheat Code Central – 90
NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits is old-school at heart, but completely innovative and fresh when it comes to gameplay. It’s an excellent adventure that defines the gold standard for WiiWare.

Official Nintendo Magazine UK – 85
A cracking download that exemplifies everything great about WiiWare. [Sept 2009, p.94]

IGN – 85
NyxQuest is a very well made and fun platforming game in the style of LostWinds.

Everyeye.it – 80
The folks at Over The Top Games gave life to a good (yet not very original) idea, using mythology to create a good and solid platform. Maybe it had been better to use an open structure, and not levels, but NyxQuest is surely one of the better games available on WiiWare. And they seem to be a lot.

Eurogamer – 80
It’s lovely, and if there’s any criticism to be made, it’s that while NyxQuest effortlessly builds into something delightful, it never quite manages that little extra twist that distinguishes a truly memorable title. Even so, that’s still enough to make it stand out from its WiiWare peers.

Edge Magazine – 80
Over the Top has tempered its obvious ambition with skill and understanding, and the result is a game that’s refreshingly quick to take flight.

Teletext GameCentral – 70
Better looking than many a retail game and with only a little more variety it could’ve been a 2D classic.

The game is set in Ancient Greece and incorporates mythological creatures and the Greek gods into the world of the game. Players control Nyx, a winged girl, who has befriended Icarus after he flies to her realm in the sky. When Icarus mysteriously disappears, Nyx sets out to find him in the ruined world below. As they progress through the game, players will be given special powers by gods such as Zeus and Eolus which gives them the ability to move objects, manipulate the scenery, control the wind and to cast rays to kill enemies.

Players control Nyx and the powers of the gods by using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Players use the analogue stick on the Nunchuk to move Nyx and control her flight, while powers are cast by pointing at the screen and onto different objects with an onscreen reticule. The game also features a two-player cooperative mode, with one player directly controlling Nyx and the other controlling the gods’ powers.

Fallen Soldier’s Father Leaves a Parting Gift

Filed under: Fanboy — hattrick @ 8:37 am

No, this is not necessarily Nintendo related, but it is a touching gamer-related story that I wanted to pass on to all of you.

COD funeral Fallen Soldiers Father Leaves a Parting Gift

British Private Richard Hunt made the ultimate sacrifice last week when his company was struck by an explosive device while on patrol in Afghanistan.

During a well-attended ceremony back home in Monmouthshire on what would have been the fallen soldier’s 22nd birthday, Private Hunt’s father, Phillip, commemorated the time they spent together playing Call of Duty: World at War.

Along with flowers and other items, a copy of the game was laid at the site of the memorial service. A handwritten not attached to the game read:

“Happy Birthday ‘Hunty’. Play you again one day. Dad.”
