Hey everyone.  Hattrick here.  Some of you  may have wondered why I haven’t been posting much lately.  I apologize for the last couple weeks.  The truth is that I was in the middle of the large ice storm that hit New England the week before Christmas.  I was without power for 4 1/2 days.  Then I traveled back to the midwest for Christmas with family and then to get married!  I’ve not had a great deal of internet access…and I’ve kind of been busy with wedding plans.  I will be heading back to New England in a couple days.  At that time, I’ll be hopping back on a somewhat regular schedule of weekly Wii Shop Channel Updates and Nintendo Channel Updates, news, and reviews.

Until then, enjoy some photos from my wedding.  We had Mii wedding cake toppers, that we awesome!  I totally recommend this man named Paul Pape if you are thinking of doing something similar.  To visit his site, click here.

Obama bringing Wii to the White House

GameCulture writes:

Barack Obama’s daughters are now officially the nation’s First Gamers.

According to the New York Times, Malia and Sasha found a Nintendo Wii under the Christmas tree this year and spent some of their holiday in Hawaii bowling on the new console with their President (and now gamer) dad.

With a Wii in the White House, gaming has finally infiltrated the world’s most powerful living room. Say what you will about Nintendo abandoning the “hardcore” gamer, but remember that (for many of you) your chief executive, and the leader of the Free World, now wears a wrist strap.

Although Obama won’t be able to restore financial markets and world stability with the wave of Wiimote, having a console in his home and raising two gamers in public will obviously have a tremendous effect on his attitudes toward videogames. With luck (and an Executive Wi-Fi connection), Obama will see first hand how games can surprise, inspire and engage both children and adults. Maybe he’ll discover the bloom of independent gaming with World of Goo or realize the potential of games to teach kids about complex systems. Equally, he’ll get an authentic feel for the challenges and responsibilities that parents (and publishers) face. Hopefully, when issues of game policy emerge, it will be that experience, and not perception or press, which will inform the positions he takes.

That’s about all gamers can hope for. Well, that and the chance “pwn the President” online, perhaps.

Rock Band 3 breaking the annual cycle January 8, 2009

heidi 600x336 Rock Band 3 breaking the annual cycle

During a keynote interview at Billboard’s “Digital Music Live,” conference session at the Consumer Electronics Show today, Harmonix co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopolous let slip a potentially interesting tidbit about his company’s timing plans for the highly anticipated Rock Band 3.

“We’ve actually made a choice to break out of the annual release cycle for Rock Band this year,” Rigopolous told the assembled press and industry members. “[This is] partly because the annual cycle places limits on the choices you can make as a developer. We’re trying to take a long term view.”

Rigopolous added that the delay was also partly so the developer could focus on the Beatles-focused game announced last October.

WiiWare: Tiki Towers Reviews

tikitowers 600x328 WiiWare: Tiki Towers Reviews

IGN – 73/100
Real Networks is new to the Nintendo casual gaming scene, but both of its initial titles (this and Tropix! on DS) have surprised me with their quality.

WiiWare World – 70/100
Tiki’s world of bamboo is an entertaining game with bags of personality. Some of the later levels will take you quite some time to solve so there is easily enough gameplay on offer here.

Tetris ‘helps to reduce trauma’

Filed under: Fanboy, News, Tips, Tricks, and Secrets — hey_suburbia @ 11:39 am

gameboy Tetris helps to reduce trauma

Volunteers were exposed to distressing images, with some given the game to play 30 minutes later, the PLoS One journal reported.

Players had fewer “flashbacks”, perhaps because it helped disrupt the laying down of memories, said the scientists.

It is hoped the study could aid the development of new strategies for minimizing the impact of trauma.

However, the researchers accept translating their findings into practical applications could prove difficult.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), often associated with experiences during conflict, can affect anyone who has suffered a sudden and shocking incident.

One of its main features is the “flashback”, in which the distressing sights, sounds or smells of the incident can return in everyday life.
