This Week: What You Missed March 20, 2010

Filed under: News, Videos, Wii/DSiWare — PopnFrsh @ 1:43 pm

Although we could call this the Wiikly WiiCap, that would be extreme overkill in the use of Wii in the title, lol.  Saturday is unfortunately a usually slow day for new news and to complement the others on the site who bring you so many links to photos and videos to check out, here is just a brief smattering of some of the interesting topics that appeared through our WiiNintendo gateway.

Sonic 4 Update March 18, 2010

Today SEGA updated the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 website with some nice tidbits. First they have added the first image of one of the four stages in the game, Splash Hill, which looks and possibly pays homage to the Sonic the Hedgehog games of old. On the site it also says that a video is incoming.

Sonic 4 Logo Sonic 4 Update

In response to a Blog Post from earlier this week on the site, they have also added in the full track mp3 download for Act 1 the Splash Hill Zone (composed by Jun Senoue, composer of Sonic and Knuckles and others).

Definitely check out the official site for more updates and to get the track. Remember Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 hits WiiWare this Summer.

Nintendo Download 3-15-2010 March 15, 2010

Filed under: News, Videos, Virtual Console, Wii/DSiWare — hattrick @ 9:19 am

Today seems like it will be a great day for Nintendo’s downloads. On WiiWare, we get the highly anticipated Wii Motion Plus fighter game Rage of the Gladiator and a 3-sport shooting game called Triple Shot Sports. We recommend RotG over TSS, though. On the Wii Virtual Console, we get the original TurboGrafx-16 CD game Castlevania Rondo of Blood. For the DSiWare market, we get 4 titles, which makes sure there should be at least one that will excite you.  Zoo Frenzy seems to be a zoo simulator with mini-games, 101 MiniGolf World is exactly what it sounds like with up to 8-player support, Battle of Giants: Dinosaurs – Fight for Survival pits your dinosaur up against others as you fight to the death, and Car Jack Streets seems to be a top-down GTA-clone. What will you pick? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences. As always, you can check out the official press release below, where we have embedded gameplay videos to help you out.

The Grinder – Switched to Top-Down Perspective? March 12, 2010

Filed under: News, Videos — hattrick @ 8:08 am

It seems that The Grinder has taken some turns.  Not only is it going multi-platform, but they have also changed the perspective for the other platforms.  It now seems to have a similar look to Marvel Ultimate Alliance instead of the first-person view of previous builds.  Will this be the same for Wii?  As of right now, we do not know. Below is some footage
GameTrailers caught while at GDC ‘10.

Nintendo “not there yet” on new console, says Fils-Aime March 10, 2010

Reggie Fils Aime Nintendo not there yet on new console, says Fils Aime

Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed that the company is not yet ready to seriously think about releasing a new home console.

Speaking to Forbes, Fils-Aime commented:

“When the software developer comes forward with an idea that can’t be executed on the current platform, that’s when we start thinking seriously about the next system. We’re not there yet, from a Wii perspective.”

Fils-Aime was also lukewarm about the importance of high definition graphics and 3D technology, saying:

“For us, technology is not an endpoint. Technology is an enabler for fantastic consumer experiences. So from a hardware standpoint, we are always looking at technology. But in the end, the technology has to enable a new, unique experience.”

“So when people talk about high definition for the Wii console our feedback is that that by itself will not create a brand new experience. Therefore, we’re not interested. What we have to push for are groundbreaking new experiences. Technology has to enable it, not to be a means all by itself.”

On the question of increased competition from Microsoft and Sony’s forthcoming motion controllers Fils-Aime cautioned that:

“Our competition will face their own challenges. They’ll have to create compelling software. They’ll need to offer it at a price point that makes sense. They will be separately challenged because the motion-enabled part of their business will only be a small part of their line. For us, it’s core to what we do,”

Fils-Aime also dismissed any talk of competition with Apple and its handhelds, stating:

“There’s been no data to suggest an encroachment on our business. On the other hand, we recognize that consumers have a limited amount of entertainment time, and anything that takes entertainment time away from the Nintendo DS, DSi and Wii is a competitor. And so from that standpoint, we need to build experiences that are compelling and sticky, and that consumers can get excited about. That’s our challenge.”

Tomorrow Corporation – A Home for Indie Devs

CorporationBlimp 600x385 Tomorrow Corporation A Home for Indie Devs

Tomorrow Corporation is pleased to announce the existence of Tomorrow Corporation, a massive new “indie game” studio.

“We’re literally bursting with cash,” said a Tomorrow Corporation PR spokeswoman, “because if there’s one thing that makes money these days, it’s indie games.”

“For years, giant corporations have been hurt by scrappy indie studios hogging the limelight with titles like Crayon Physics Deluxe, Braid, World of Goo, and Super Meat Boy. To those tiny, un-American, indie developers, Tomorrow Corporation would like to deliver a message: Your reign of terror ends… Tomorrow! ”

Tomorrow Corporation’s massive Human Resources Department has recently acquired a glut of indie sellouts, including developers Allan Blomquist, Kyle Gabler, and Kyle Gray – all former grad students from Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center and co-founders of the wasteful and profitless Experimental Gameplay Project.

pr diagram Tomorrow Corporation A Home for Indie Devs

More recently, Gabler co-founded the indie studio 2D BOY, responsible for creating the reprehensible game World of Goo, to which Blomquist also regrettably contributed his indie talents. Gray recently created the unpatriotic Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, a game about sipping tea.

Tomorrow Corporation has yet to announce its first indie game title, but would like to remind fans to check back frequently for exciting new information.

“The secret to a truly great indie game is that special human touch,” says the spokeswoman, “which our producers have scheduled for insertion shortly before the product ships.”

“Let’s all remember,” she added before floating away in the official Tomorrow Corporation blimp, “the future … is Tomorrow!”

Today is Tuesday, which can only mean another episode of WiiNintendo’s interactive Nintendo Fuse Podcast! This podcast is done every Tuesday at 10 pm EST (or rather, 10:15 pm). Not only do we discuss the latest Nintendo news and rumors, but we’ve had special guests (like Tommy Tallarico from Video Games Live) and contests as well. Rest assured, we’re planning to have more of those in the future, but in the mean time you can catch up on all the great episodes we had. You can listen to the old episodes here, or by subscribing in iTunes by searching for Nintendo Fuse or by clicking this link. Also, we have some plans for the upcoming PAX as well…

The Penny Arcade Expo is coming to the east coast (specifically Boston) for the first time! Many of the WiiNintendo/WiiFuse Forums/Nintendo Fuse Podcast members will be in attendance, including hey_suburbia, hattrick, and myself. It would be awesome to meet up with all of you. It’s thanks to you that we can enjoy what we do and I would love to have a little meet-up at PAX East. For full details on PAX East, check out www.paxsite.com. If you are able to go, please let us know by posting a comment. I can’t wait! Now that that exciting announcement is over, let’s get into what we are talking about tonight.

The Nintendo Media Summit is over and you would think that after the news on Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M, and the rest of the games shown, is there going to be any more big news before E3? The answer is yes! The Game Developers Conference (GDC) starts today and later this week, we’ll be getting more details on Metroid: Other M hopefully. Nintendo Power claims to have a world reveal for Wii in their next issue. On the DS front, Scribblenauts 2 was officially announced and we have the first details. A new Wii bundle has surfaced at WalMart. Plus, a mysterious patent for what looks to be a DS cartridge has been uncovered. All of that and more in tonight’s episode! So make sure you tune in tonight at 10:15 pm eastern time for our LIVE recording. And did I tell you that YOU can actually participate LIVE? That’s right, there are actually three ways to participate…

1) Chat in the chatroom by going to the Nintendo Fuse TalkShoe page once the podcast begins at 10:15 pm est.

2) Call in with your phone by dialing (724) 444-7444 and when prompted for the Call ID, dial 59264#. You can then press 1 to join in as a guest, or you can create a free account on TalkShoe and enter your PIN number on the phone.

3) Call in with your microphone on your computer by downloading TalkShoe Live for free from here. Once installed, go to the Nintendo Fuse TalkShoe page and then select the option to connect through TalkShoe Live Pro.

Netflix for Nintendo DS?

Filed under: News, Nintendo DS/DSi — hattrick @ 9:08 pm

netflix ds survey 600x205 Netflix for Nintendo DS?

What do you think about watching movies and TV shows on your Nintendo DS? Netflix wants to know. While this might seem crazy to some, remember that they asked these questions of a possible service for Wii as well.  How the service might work is still complete speculation, as is the idea that we will have Netflix on Nintendo’s handheld console.  Although, it is interesting to think of the possibilities.

Below is the text from the above image:

Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies and & TV episodes on their Nintendo DS. The selection available to instantly watch includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes. There are no advertisements or trailers, and movies start in as little as 30 seconds. You can fast-forward, rewind, and pause or watch again. The movies & TV episodes you instantly watch are included in your Netflix membership at no additional fee.

BURBANK, Calif. – March 8, 2010 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces plans to create the next Scribblenauts for Nintendo DS, a follow-up to the revolutionary hit videogame where players use their imagination to write any word bring that object to life and use it to solve puzzles.  Available in fall 2010, the follow-up game expands the innovative elements from the acclaimed first title with many inventive new features, including an adjectives system that allows players to push the limits of their imagination to create their own experience.

In this new game created and developed by 5TH Cell, players use the stylus and touch screen to help Maxwell, the game’s hero, acquire the “Starite,” the prize earned from solving the puzzle in even more robust challenges and redesigned levels.  Players now have the ability to write any object that comes to mind and modify it in any way they desire using adjectives to reach the goal in each level.  Adjectives can change the color, size, elements, behaviors and many other aspects of the object they are describing. Multiple adjectives can be combined together to produce incredibly creative objects, allowing the player’s imagination to run wild for a truly unique and individualistic experience.

Twin Galaxies Announces South Carolina Gamer as New World Champ

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TwinGalaxies.com (click for photo)(Press Release) – Mar 05, 2010 – A new official World Record score has landed in the hands of a gamer in Walhalla, SC.

32-year-old Brandon LeCroy has just racked up the new official World Record score on hit game New Super Mario Bros. Wii, according to famed video game scorekeepers Twin Galaxies. LeCroy racked up an impressive 3,647,680 points on Twin Galaxies Extreme Rules on the popular Nintendo title.

Under Twin Galaxies rules for the title, LeCroy had to rack up his score from the start of the game on just one life while maintaining foward progress along the way. The record score for this game has changed hands a dozen times already between gamers in the US, Canada, and The Netherlands.

“I’ve had the privilege to watch a few high level games so far on this title, and this guy has the point pressing down to a science,” said Eric Akeson, the Twin Galaxies official who verified the new record score. “Two and a half hours into this game, I was disappointed when he finally lost a life. I totally expect more from this guy”

Twin Galaxies was founded during the original video game boom in the early 1980s and still maintains a massive database of scores from it’s inception to modern hits on the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, XBox 360, and PlayStation 3 via it’s website and publications. Twin Galaxies scores have been reported by worldwide sources such as Guinness World Records, G4tv, MTV, Wired Magazine, CNN and more.
