Sonic Generations (3DS) – Hands-On First Impressions

After playing through both the XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Sonic Generations at SEGA’s “Sonic Boom” event, I was ready to finally get my hands on the Nintendo 3DS version. On the final day of E3 2011, I made my way to the SEGA booth to try it out. I was able to play through the Green Hill Zone as both classic and modern Sonic, and I finished with a boss fight using the classic. Classic Sonic felt really good, and I preferred it in 2D using the control pad. It felt and looked much like the classic Sonic games, which is a very good thing, in my opinion. Modern Sonic felt better in 3D mode using the circle pad for control. There was a bit of 3D gameplay built into the side-scrolling, and Sonic moved much faster in both the foreground and the background of the level. The boss battle took forever for me to figure out how to beat it, but it was extremely easy to stay alive by continuing to grab my lost rings. The physics are very similar to Sonic 4, which means that many might be upset. One example is that Sonic will stop moving forward in the air once you stop pressing forward. This might not be a big deal to newer Sonic fans, but the older ones might not like it. Overall, it was a fun game, but I think the 3DS graphics could be pushed a bit more in the end, and other things could be tweaked. Sonic fans should be very pleased, though, as it is a good game. It just could be much better with small changes.
