Project Café – Nintendo announces Wii successor; to be playable at E3

According to an investors note (below), Nintendo will be releasing the newest console in 2012.  There will be a playable version at E3 this year, June 7, 2011.  Of course, the multiple rumors surrounding the system are still floating around.  So, we’ll have to be content with those until Nintendo sets us straight.

To whom it may concern:

Re: Wii’s successor system

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.

Sales of this new system have not been included in the financial forecasts announced today for the fiscal term ending March 2012.

Seems odd that in 2011 a marketable feature of the device is HD considering its been in consoles and numerous other devices since the early part of the last decade.

Three new hardware pieces in just 1.5 years is a bit tough, lol (3DS, NGP, and now Wii Successor), they know how to take our money…Hopefully Wii Successor finds its success in original IPs and not rehashes of tried and true franchises…

It does seem odd. I think most people just assume at this point that HD is supposed to be a standard feature.

As for your comment about original IP’s and not just rehashes, I’m on the fence about this. I would really like some original IP’s from Nintendo, as long as they don’t stray completely from those franchises which made them so popular.

Sure, there is a lot to spend money on in a short period of time (if you are up to it), but we had much the same dilemma in 2005-2006, when the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii all released within about a one-year window (and for the latter two, within a 2-3 *day* window).
