In what seems to be becoming a tradition around here, I have once again put together a Top 10 list of family friendly games for Thanksgiving and other holidays this year.  The main requirements for this list were the level of fun and that it had to allow for at least 4-players.  I hope this can help bring your family and friends together as you gather around this Thanksgiving and after.  In my opinion, this top 10 list contains games that everyone should be able to jump in and have fun.  Honestly, that is what gaming should be about — having fun. Without further delay, here is my “Top 10 Wii Family Games for Thanksgiving 2010.”

10. WarioWare: Smooth Moves
WarioWare: As long as your family and friends are willing to let loose and have fun, WarioWare: Smooth Moves will keep everyone entertained — even those not playing. The great benefit to this game is that you can play up to 12 players, utilizing one Wii Remote.

9. Bomberman Blast
This WiiWare game boasts 8-players simultaneously, as long as you have 4 Wii Remotes and 4 GameCube Controllers. In a frantic, no-hold-barred game of throwing bombs at each other, you are bound to have fun while also having a chance to get even with that cousin you really like.

8. Just Dance 2
Even if you do not normally “get down” on Thanksgiving, Just Dance 2 is a fun way to work off some of those extra calories. It is easy to jump in and follow the on-screen dancers. With a great list of included songs, you are sure to find something for everyone. If not, you can always go to their online store and download one that suits your mood.

7. Tetris Party (and Tetris Party Deluxe)
Maybe your family is different than mine, but I remember spending hours playing Tetris on my Game Boy with my parents when I was younger, and I’m serious about hours. We’d compete to see who could get the high score. This was often the way we passed time during long car rides. With either the Wii retail (box) or WiiWare addition, you can not only play 4 players locally, you can enjoy this game with family who couldn’t make it for this year’s Thanksgiving by playing online. You can also play with the Balance Board, creating a brand new experience.

6. NBA JAM
If you ever played the original during the holidays, the newest version should bring back some old memories of dunking the ball over your cousin, or knocking your uncle on his rear before stuffing it home. Add in newer players, alley-oops, updated graphics, and a remix mode…and you have yourself one crazy basketball game that will keep everyone entertained for hours.

5. Wii Party
Nintendo’s newest “Wii ____” game is built around having a great time. With over 80 minigames, every person in your family will be sure to find something they enjoy. Whether it be hiding the Wii Remote or going head-to-head in a Mario Party-style board game, you are sure to have a blast.

4. Guitar Hero & Rock Band (tie)
Both games have broadened the music game genre to 4 players, letting everyone in. Even if you don’t feel comfortable playing guitar, you can sing along karaoke-style, beat on the drums, or jump in on keyboard (Rock Band 3 only). With a host of songs ranging from oldies to modern hits, and with expanded playlists through newer versions and downloadable songs, you are guaranteed to find a song for everyone. The newest versions are Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and Rock Band 3.

3. Mario Kart Wii
This is another online game that will pit you against 11 other friends and family members who couldn’t make it this year. If online multiplayer isn’t your thing, that’s ok, because the 4-player local multiplayer is plenty to keep people busy. For those not good with joysticks and tons of buttons, you can even use the Wii Wheel and steer using motion controls. I remember spending several hours playing Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash with my family. The newest installment is than ever.

2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Most people in your family are probably familiar with Mario, and now they have the chance to jump in together for some crazy 4-player action. Whether you are competing in a coin-battle or cooperating as you progress through the main game, you are bound to have a great time with this one. In fact, there are not too many negative aspects of this game.

1. Wii Sports Resort
Again, nothing has changed from last year. Wii Sports Resort is definitely a go-to party game. Sure, you need the Motion Plus add-on to your Wii Remotes, but it is well worth the purchase. In fact, you could even pick up the special edition that contains 2 Motion Plus accessories. With 12 sports, including 2 returning (bowling and golf), everyone is bound to find their favorites. Whether it be sword play, archery, or table tennis, Wii Sports Resort will not disappoint this Thanksgiving.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Goldeneye: I remember sitting around after Thanksgiving dinner playing 4-player split-screen with my dad, uncle, and cousin for hours on Goldeneye for Nintendo 64. Sure, it is a bit more violent than Mario or Tetris, but if you have a group of teens or adults looking for a great game, look no further than the re-imagined Goldeneye for Wii.
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl: With the right group of people who enjoy pinning Mario against Pikachu or a number of other characters, Super Smash Bros. is always a go-to game. Like Goldeneye, it might be more suited for the older crowd of teens and adults, anyone can jump in. You never know. Your grandma might be able to pull a mean Smash Attack!
  • Carnival Games & New Carnival Games: While many would consider these “shovel-ware,” many children and families have had hours of fun with Carnival Games.  It is also easy to pick up and play, making it easy for your grandma or great-aunt Bessie to get in the action. The newest version is only a month old and boasts even more games.
