New info on New Super Mario Bros. Wii

null

Kotaku got to see New Super Mario Bros. Wii in action recently and they’ve written up two posts. The first describes the Super Guide feature, which you can read about in my post here. The other post has more details on the game and what it includes. Below are the highlights, or head over to Kotaku for the full details.

- Campaign mode that includes 8 worlds, each with its own mushroom huts, fortresses and castles, just like in New Super Mario Bros. on the DS.
- Plot involves Bowser capturing Peach and Mario rescuing her… the usual.
- If you play by yourself, you have to play as Mario. If a second player joins in, they will have to be Luigi. Third player has to be Blue Toad and fourth player has to be Yellow Toad.
- Some of the levels include a desert level with an elevator you ride on, a level where you can ride Yoshis, an underwater cave level where you ride on a raft, and a lava level where you are on a roller-coaster made of bones.
- Game is played with Wii Remote sideways. Press 1 button to pick up a friend or bomb and then shake Wii Remote to throw.
- Each player starts with five lives. The game will continue if at least one person is still alive, but if everyone dies at once, the level will be terminated. If someone dies, they will be brought back in a bubble and be “wailing for help through the Wii Remote speaker”.
- Bosses include the Koopalings, Bowser Jr., and Bowser.
- There are special Toad-rescuing missions that involve players playing cleared levels to save a Toad and carry him through the level.
- Multiplayer challenges that include two modes: Free For All and Coin Battle. Free For All has everyone going through a level trying to get a new high score, either together or against each other. Coin Battle has everyone trying to get the most coins.
- The levels were “universally challenging”. Collision and death is “constant, though seldom frustrating”. Can be compared to the best levels of Little Big Planet on PS3.
- The game “looks polished”. The screen was often full of characters.
