Wii Firmware Update 4.2 out now… kills homebrew [UPDATED] September 29, 2009

Nintendo has released the 4.2 firmware update for Wii. What new features does it bring? Well, none it seems. What it does do though is delete the Homebrew Channel, BootMii, all forms of cIOS, and more. So if you have any homebrew on your Wii at all, do not update!

[UPDATE]
From Nintendo…

“This update provides behind-the-scenes fixes that will not affect features but will improve overall system performance.”

As far as homebrew goes, Bannerbomb no longer works, but Indiana PWNS and SmashStack both work. However, you won’t be able to install the Homebrew Channel or BootMii on a 4.2 version Wii. Based on some of the stuff that was done in this update, it’s clear that Nintendo’s target was homebrew. They even released this firmware update worldwide, probably hoping to eliminate most homebrew together. Those with homebrew will have to remain without the Wii Shop Channel for a while it seems (since you have to update to 4.2 to use it).
