Despite its declining hardware sales and a rough economy, Nintendo is still confident that is has blockbuster titles in its catalog. In fact, the company believes it has three blockbusters: Wii Sports Resort, New Super Mario Bros., and Wii Fit Plus. According to Gamasutra, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes that these titles will sell 10-million units each (worldwide). Iwata said:

“These three titles have already been available for hands-on demonstrations at E3 this year. They were highly evaluated by most of those who actually tried them. Distributors also gave feedback like ‘The key player of this holiday season will be Nintendo as expected.’”

If you factor in current economic conditions, Iwata’s estimate might seem aggressive, but if you consider the ridiculous installed base of the Wii, the numbers sound perfectly reasonable. Wii Sports Resort is already selling at a hot pace and I have no doubt that Wii Fit Plus will follow suit. As for New Super Mario Bros., I’m confident it will sell in Japan, but the game has been receiving a lot of backlash in America, with enthusiasts complaining about Nintendo selling the same game over and over again. Then again, it’s frickin’ Mario, so no matter how many people are complaining, it will likely sell millions.
