Wii Exceeds 50 Million, DS Exceeds 100 Million May 8, 2009
During their recent fiscal report, Nintendo revealed the sales totals for their consoles. The Wii sold 25.95 million units during the fiscal year, pushing the console past the 50 million mark. The DS sold another 31.18 million units, bringing its lifetime total over 101 million. Nintendo notes that both marks are records for home and handheld consoles, respectively.
For new DS software, Pokemon Platinum was tops with 3.75 million in sales, followed by Kirby Superstar Ultra selling 2.36 million. The two Brain Age titles sold a combined 7.31 million units, bringing the life-to-date total up to 31.12 million. Nintendo noted that the number of million-sellers on the DS has nearly doubled over the past year, from 57 to 91.
Wii Fit led the way on the Wii, selling 16.37 million units worldwide during the fiscal year, bringing life-to-date numbers up to 18.22 million sold. This was followed by Mario Kart at 15.4 million, Animal Crossing: City Folk with 3.38 million and Wii Music selling 2.65 million. Million sellers on the Wii more than doubled from 26 to 54.
For the coming fiscal year, Nintendo estimates another 26 million in Wii hardware sales, with 30 million units of DS being sold as well. On the software front, Nintendo expects 220 million Wii software units to be sold and 180 million in DS software sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.
