Wii MotionPlus, coming sooner than expected

Thomas Singleton said in the latest Nintendo Power

“Thomas Singleton (EA) and his Vancouver-based team hope to take things to the next level, thanks in no small part to the Wii MotionPlus accessory (due out prior to Grand Slam’s release).”

June 18th was the expected date for Wii MotionPlus to hit the shelves to accompany Grand Slam. So if it comes early, will it be backwards compatible with anything? Wiiware usage? Homebrew???

At any rate, I am personally heading out to San Francisco on March 12th to attend an exclusive EA event that will showcase a variety of these games and then some. I will ask the obvious questions, but if you guys want to post specific questions you’d like me to ask EA, let me know in teh comments below.

In particular: EA SPORTS Active, Tiger Woods and Grand Slam Tennis

    hey_suburbia, what do you mean by sooner than expected? Wii MotionPlus releases with Wii Sports Resort, which was said to come in the Spring. Now we know specifically before June 18th, which is still Spring. And that makes perfect sense.

    Nintendo can release Wii Sports Resort maybe in May or beginning of June and that comes with Wii MotionPlus. Then they can release third party games that are compatible with Wii MotionPlus after Wii Sports Resort releases. They never said they’re going to seel Wii MotionPlus separately, so we don’t know when or if that will happen, but it’s been guaranteed that Wii Sports Resort would release in the Spring, which is before June 18th.

    Regardless, I hope you get to try out Wii MotionPlus so you can tell us all about it!

    hey yall remember that the conduit will also have wmp(wii motion plus) and this is coming out on june 9 so we also know that it will be before that also

    @ Matt – Actually “The Conduit” will not have WMP.

    High Voltage’s Eric Nofsinger has confirmed in an interview at New York Comic Con that their upcoming Wii Exclusive FPS title The Conduit will no longer make use of the Wii Motion Plus Peripheral. The shooter was confirmed to be making use of the new technology late last year but new developments have seen the compatibility of the peripheral dropped.

    According to Nofsinger the main reason behind the removal of support for the device was due to the fact the game was built from the ground up for use of the Wii Remote alone and that Wii Motion Plus really didn’t add much to the experience. Eric also said that when the peripheral was included it didn’t have many uses while in gameplay and that it felt “tacked on”.

    The removal of support for Wii Motion Plus is not exactly a surprise. It has been proven in the past that First Person Shooters on the Wii can have great controls with the standard Wii Remote setup. The new peripheral does increase motion detection to a 1:1 ratio but it isn’t a necessity for the FPS genre.
