Classic Controller PRO for Wii announced by Nintendo

null

The Japanese Nintendo site has been updated with a new controller for Wii: the Classic Controller PRO. Above you’ll see an image of the new Classic Controller PRO and there’s an image of the regular Classic Controller at the bottom of this post for reference. At first glance, the Classic Controller PRO looks like a shell for the Classic Controller, but it’s actually completely new. Among the changes are the redesign and movement of the ZL and ZR buttons, the control sticks being farther apart, and the cord now coming out of the top instead of the bottom. Everything else is the same; it’s still not wireless and it doesn’t have rumble.

So what’s the point of this new controller? Well, we don’t really know seeing as how it just popped up on Nintendo’s site. What we do know though is that it’ll release in Japan this Summer. I’m thinking Nintendo just wanted to make a few changes to the Classic Controller and it’s nothing big. The Classic Controller has a number of RVL-005 and the Classic Controller has a number of RVL-005(-02) so it seems just like a slight redesign to me. What do you guys think, is this redesign worth purchasing if you already have a Classic Controller?

Absolutely not worth purchasing if you have the original ! Unless you’re an avid collector.

  • Verdandi

Looks like it could be used for gamecube games, not gunna lie i would love 2 buy one if it does work for them

Actually, I would prefer this one over the old one. I like how the ZL & ZR are positioned (it was harder to hit them originally)…I like how the analog sticks are further apart (sometimes my thumbs hit in games like Galaxy Wars)…It might be more comfy with the two “handles”…And I think the cord coming out the top is better too.

@Verdandi: It’s still connected to the Wii Remote like the Classic Controller is so it can’t be used for GameCube games. I may end up buying one eventually, as long as it has no problem working in Wii games that support the Classic Controller like Brawl (I don’t see why it would have any problems though).

This is one thing I have been hoping for… But, with that weird center button on the top of the original controller (which, I presume, is to lock shells in place), I thought they would just release a shell.

Oh well, I need more Classic controllers anyway.

  • Charmy

I don’t have a Classic Controller yet, so I actually might get this.

  • nitro_rev

ah man, this one looks much better than the original, but I already have 2

@ SV – Actually I heard the button was originally for attaching the Wii Remote to the back of the controller, but they ended up not doing it…and left the “button” for some reason…maybe like you said for shells.

  • Dantendo

this might be to aviod any more lawsuits against the classic controller.

@Dantendo – Possibly, but the main targets for lawsuits (the analog sticks) are still there.

@hattrick – Hm, that’s interesting. I wonder why a third party never made anything for it, though.

  • Charmy

    What lawsuits?

If I recall correctly, some guy from Texas claims to have patented the particular technology employed in the Gamecube and Classic controller analog sticks. He didn’t bother suing them in the Gamecube years, but came out of the blue and sued them last year or something like that.
