Deadly Creatures – First Impressions

deadlycreatures

I rented Deadly Creatures tonight.  So far, I completed the first chapter, and almost finished the second chapter.  Overall, the story is that some “deadly creatures” took over some place.  You see and hear the men trying to figure out what is going on.  You start off as a spider (a tarantula I believe) in the first chapter, and then switch to a scorpion by chapter two.

The story and gameplay is somewhat confusing.  I’ve yet to figure out why I am playing as these “deadly creatures” and what the real point is.  I defeat the scorpion as the spider, but then I become the scorpion.  Anyhow, on to controls.  They are pretty good.  You will game moves the more you play, which is a good touch.  The control sensitivity is also adjustable, but I found the default was pretty good.  For the spider, Z jumps, A attacks, movement has stronger attacks, C shoots web.  For the scorpion, A and movement attacks, Z guards.  The camera is pretty good.  As the spider, who can move around more on the screen (since it is smaller), it is sometimes easy to get lost.  However, if this ever happens, you can push down on the control pad to bring the camera back to behind you.  Also, you can push 2 to show an arrow where you need to go next.  This is a nice touch for those who get a bit lost.  And it’s an option, so you do not feel like you are cheating the whole time…just when you need to.  The music was very fitting to the game — filled with dark tones and strings.  On screen, you basically have a life bar that only pops up when fighting and your tips/hints that pop up at certain times.  Other than that, you’ve do not have much HUD.  This is nice, as the gameplay fills the entire screen.  The graphics are pretty good for a Wii title.  I’d say they are comparable to Tomb Raider Underworld.

Overall, it is a very interestingly new idea in video games.  I’m not sure I’ve ever played a deadly bug before.  I did have fun, and I’d recommend this title for others who find this idea intriguing.  However, I would recommend this as a rental.  I do not know how long it will keep you entertained.  I’m finding it high on the 1st-2nd play scale, but low on the replay scale right now.

X button? Do you mean Z or B?

I was thinking of getting Deadly Creatures for my birthday next month. It’s between Deadly Creatures, Dead Rising or MadWorld. I can’t decide. Maybe Pikmin, since I never played it on GameCube. But Deadly Creatures has me the most intrigued.

You should post your post-game impressions when you’re finished or nearing the end (without spoilers, of course).

    Thanks for the impressions!
BTW, how long is the game?
