Shovelware is a derogatory computer jargon term that refers to software noted more for the quantity of what is included than for the quality or usefulness. The term is also used to refer to software that is ported from one computer platform or storage medium to another with little thought given to adapting it for use on the destination platform or medium.

The term “shovelware” has more recently been used in a more general sense by video game reviewers to indicate any product of disappointingly low quality due to a lack of time and effort by the developers. The Nintendo Wii and DS have often been criticized for having many shovelware titles, with producers hoping to make money with the large success of the consoles at the expense of creating quality games.

By the way pick up Retro Gaming Challenge for the DS, I’ve been playing it for the past hour or so and it’s great… or should I say it is not shovelware…

    It’s fun. I grew up playing games from the early 80′s and it works really well in this game. I think IGN said it will with this:

    “The developers of Retro Game Challenge didn’t just accurately recreate 8-bit gaming — they made a bunch of really good games. Requiring players to complete specific challenges is a great way to get us thinking about a game in new ways. Plus there’s all this extra content that they didn’t need to include, but it makes this feel like a very robust package. The only thing that’s really missing is multiplayer, as that was a huge component of gaming on the NES. A sequel will be out soon in Japan, so go out and buy a bunch of copies of Retro Game Challenge so we can play new 16-bit games next.”

    I’m REALLY thinking about getting it. I’ve just got so many new DS games lately, so I need to pace myself. Too many games and not enough time. Ha!
