Nintendo Mensa – February 2nd, 2009

Link is putting some fairies in to his bottles.

If Link puts one fairy per bottle, there are three fairies left over.

If instead Link puts four fairies per bottle (and all of the fairies get used), there are three bottles left over.

How many fairies and bottles does Link have?

[spoiler name="View Answer Here"]ANSWER: five bottles and eight fairies. Algebra equations that can be used to solve this problem are F – B = 3 and B – (F/4) = 3

    x = amount of fairies
    y = amount of bottles
    If Link puts one fairy per bottle, there are three fairies left over.
    This gives the equation: x=y+3
    If instead Link puts four fairies per bottle (and all of the fairies get used), there are three bottles left over.
    This gives the equation: y=x/4+3
    x=(x/4+3)+3
    4x=x+12+12
    3x=24
    x=8
    (8)=y+3
    y=8-3
    y=5
    Therefore, Link has eight fairies and five bottles.

    Great puzzle. I enjoyed it.
