Deku Nut

Here is your second puzzle, Nintendo Mensa – January 16th, 2009:

Once again we find ourselves visiting Hyrule and we see that Link and Zelda are on a picnic in the beautiful Hyrule Field outside the Castle perimeter. Princess Zelda is really picky with her mixed nut ratio and wants to mix 500 grams of cashews with some deku nuts to create a nut mix that is 20% deku nuts. How many grams of deku nuts should Link add for Zelda to be one happy princess?

ANSWER: 125 grams. Link wants 500 grams of cashews to be 80% of the mix. Divide by 4 to find that 125 grams must be 20% and then multiply by 5 to reveal that 625 grams is 100%. Since the entire mix must be 625 grams, Link should add 625 – 500 = 125 grams of deku nuts to make Zelda a happy princess.

  • Yeah, I know some of these are easy. I literally get these from the REAL mensa calendar that I have. Maybe I'll scan ahead and look for harder ones...

    I hate to be a complainy-pants, but are these going to be getting any harder? That one requires a 7th-grade understanding of word problems and Algebra 1.
