Best Video Game Christmas Gift

My Story
I can’t remember the actual year.  It was probably around 1985 or 1986.  I was around 4 year old.  We had already opened gifts at both grandparents’ houses.  I remember my cousin getting an NES, and we even played it a bit while at my grandma’s.  It was the first time I had EVER touched Super Mario Bros.  I was so nervous.  I had seen my dad playing it, and I really hoped I would be able to do it too.  As soon as I touched it, it felt great!  When the time came for us to go home, I was reminded that I never got the NES I had so desperately wanted that year.  Sure, I’d be able to play my cousin’s when I went to Grandma’s, but that wasn’t the same.  I was bummed, but I tried not letting my parents know.  I mean, it was Christmas, and we’re supposed to be thankful for the gifts we received.  Little did I know, they had something up their sleeve the entire time…  As we get home and walk in the front door, there is a large garbage bag sitting by the door.  I didn’t remember it when we left earlier that day, so I asked what it was.  My parents asked me to open it and find out.  There it was — my own Nintendo!  I was SO surprised and excited.  I don’t know if I was like that kid in the N64 Christmas video (see below), but I was probably pretty close.

What was your best Christmas gift (video game related)?

(Yes, I did get this idea from GoNintendo… It was a good one!)

Similar story, different era… My brother and I desperately wanted an Atari 2600, but my parents were swayed by George Plimpton’s dulcet tones and got us Intellivison instead.

    Awesome decision.

We played the heck out of it for years and years – even upgraded to Intellivision II when the original one crapped out.

I still remember a couple of the plays I would run on NFL Football — 9-9-2-9 – the lower receiver goes DEEP. 9-1-1-1 – a quick screen right in front of the linemen. I could go on for paragraphs about the different games and how great they were (Baseball, Skiing, Sea Battle, Utopia, Tron Deadly Discs, Shark Shark, Snafu, Night Stalker, Ice Hockey,…), but let’s just say I’m sad that Intellivision hasn’t made it to the VC yet.

Or maybe it was Super Mario Galaxy, last Christmas.

(I’d say it was the Wii itself, because my wife TOTALLY surprised me with that – this was only a few months after it released, and she paid $360 on eBay for the console, plus an extra controller/nunchuck – but that was my birthday)

Oh yeah, and they did the same kind of thing. Presents over… Just getting on with the day, then suddenly “Hey, go look in the closet!” There it was.
