Why did my SNES turn yellow?

snes plastic 1 small Why did my SNES turn yellow?

I’ve always wondered this, my NES from 1985 looks great, but my 1991 SNES looks like the dogs used it to relieve themselves. Luckily for me (and anyone else who wonders such trivial matters) the internet helps solve the problem. The great follows over at Vintage Computing and Gaming wrote up a great article exploring all aspects of this phenomenon.

Here is an excerpt from the article where they “Consult an Expert”:

“The plastics most commonly used to make the structural cases for electronic equipment are polypropylene, impact styrene, and ABS,” replied Deanin. “These all tend to discolor and embrittle gradually when exposed to UV and/or heat. They become oxidized and develop conjugated unsaturation, which produces color. They crosslink or degrade, which causes brittleness.”

From looking at a stamp on the Super Nintendo’s plastic case, I learned that the case is composed of ABS, which is a rugged, durable plastic that is sadly more susceptible to discoloration and degradation from both UV and heat than the alternatives.

“There are other plastics which would be more stable,” Deanin continued, “but manufacturers avoid them because they are more expensive and/or more difficult to process.”

Instead of using more expensive plastics, manufactures put additives known as stabilizers, absorbers, or blockers into the plastic mixture to reduce the effects of degradation. They also get creative with their use of pigmentation.

“Since most discoloration is toward yellowing, some manufacturers add a little blue to neutralize the yellow,” Deanin said. “This gives a temporary reprieve, but eventually the yellow keeps growing and overpowers it anyway.”

Steel Battalion coming to Wii

Well looks like it is rumor no more as Capcom has confirmed that Steel Battalion is indeed in development and will be priced at around $45 as opposed to the Xbox version costing around $200. The game will support the Wii Balance Board as well as the Wii Wheel (finally this can be more of some use!). The experience is being “re-created” for Wii.

Pilot Wings Wii?

pilot wings wii

Rough Translation from French:

It is no secret to anyone, Nintendo likes reused players what has worked in the past. Whether licenses headlights like Mario or Zelda or others now Animal Crossing. Pilotwings is certainly part of the latter category. So is it almost abnormal not to have a Wii version of the compilation of activities “air”. An air hole to be filled soon if we are to believe the information from us.

Indeed, it may well be on board for Pilotwings Wii in the stratosphere during the first half of 2009. A timeliness surprise no one that the firm Kyoto now to get used to such practices.

He whispers that the title should be compatible with the Wii Balance Board, especially for sequences parachute and Miis would be there. Rest now await an official of Miyamoto-san on this subject so that everything is perfect in the best of both worlds.

Original Super Smash Bros to be released (finally!) December 30, 2008

smash bros. 64

According to Japan’s VC lineup site, the 1999 N64 game Super Smash Bros. will be rereleased this January. After a good 2 years of the virtual consoles service we can assume this will be coming to America shortly after Japan gets it. Evidence of this includes all but one of the N64 titles released in Japan. I for one have been waiting for this VC game since the Wii came out. I have no idea what they were waiting for, my theory is that they are just lazy. Take a look below:

Number of N64 VC games for…

2006 (last 2 months)-1 title

2007- 9 titles

2008- 5 titles

Of all these 15 titles released in a 2 year period all Publishers have been Nintendo. This is depressing for all Conker and 007 fans, they may never be on the VC due to licensing factors.

I wish Nintendo would at least be a little bit consistent with the amount of games they release on each retro console. What are your thoughts on this?

New Play Control! Pikmin 2 Live Feed Postponed

I just got done reading that this Japan import will only work if your region is set to Japan (Usually imports from Japan work fine). I’ll have to change my consoles region before playing, so the gaming has been postponed, sorry…

The game is a Japanese import and won’t be ported to the US market until March ‘09. I’ve played Pikmin and 1/2 of Pikmin 2 on the GameCube, so we’ll see how it stacks up.

Character art, renders of Free Radical titles leaked

battlefront3 01 2 600x264 Character art, renders of Free Radical titles leaked

Now that Free Radical has been closed down and most employees have been relieved of their positions, character art and renders of Star Wars Battlefront 3 and TimeSplitters 4 have been released. The shots come from a 3D artist who released the work on his blog (though they have been removed since then).

Wii Play has out sold Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Gears of War. COMBINED

Filed under: Exclusive, Fanboy, Nintendo DS/DSi, Rants/Opinions, Reviews — hey_suburbia @ 12:56 pm
YouTube Preview Image

Slapstic.com came upon some pretty interesting information. Wii Play has been in the top ten on the sales charts pretty much every since its release, which has led to it becoming one of the top 10 best-selling games of all time. The game has sold 19.21 million units since its launch, which is an absolutely astounding number. Here are some random stats on the biggest games on other consoles:

Halo 3 has sold 8.81 million units to date.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has sold 3.71 million.
Gears of War has sold 5.74 million.
Gears of War 2 has sold 3.77 million.

Now, I’m all for great Nintendo sales, but I’m starting to have mixed feelings about these ‘casual’ games being Nintendo’s cash cow. I’ve been an avid supporter of Nintendo for 25 years and love the Wii (never owned any other system, except a Dreamcast and a Panasonic 3D0), I just don’t want Nintendo to continue focusing on these games that may do really well $$$ wise, but end up being bookends.

The flipside to this would be that these “money games” gives Nintendo the time/energy/resources to focus on putting out really great franchise games; Zelda ‘09, Pikmin Wii, Kirby?, Mario 2010?, Kid Icarus, Metroid 2010?, etc…

What is your feeling on games like Wii Play doing SO well? Good or Bad for Nintendo’s fan base? Also, it’s noteworthy of pointing out that the game was bundled with a Wiimote, so one could argue it was actually a Wiimote purchase…
