Happy 2nd Anniversary to Wii!

null

This week is a very special week for Nintendo. Today is Wii’s two year anniversary. That’s right, exactly two years ago this day I was enjoying Wii Sports for the very first time. I can’t believe it’s really been two years. See that picture above? I took it on launch day, so I would always remember that Wii was the first console I got on launch. To celebrate, why don’t all of you post your Wii launch day stories and your thoughts on these past two years? We’ll celebrate again on Friday, which is the four year anniversary for the Nintendo DS.

I had been checking all week, waiting to hear what stores were doing for the launch of this “ground-breaking” new console from Nintendo. The day before, I called a local Super Wal-Mart. They said there was hardly anyone in line. Therefore, I decided to wait until the next day. Around noon, I called and they said the line was filling up, but was probably only about 9-10 in line. My friend and I headed down right away. When we got there, there were much more than 10 people. We were number 25 in line, with only 20 available. We waited it out for a bit, hoping people in front of us had credit cards that didn’t go through. Meanwhile, we called a friend of ours to check on another Wal-Mart closer to home (not open 24-hours). She reported there was no one in line. After a few hours, we decided to move to that one. We took shifts going home to bundle up, grab our DS’s, and stake out for the night. They said we couldn’t go inside, so we waited the entire night outside the doors. Fortunately, people started showing up later, and we made some new friends. We spent the evening talking and playing DS, often making some crazy pictures on PictoChat. Finally, they opened the doors at about 7am, and I was the first to buy one. It was well worth the wait, and I have quite the story to tell now.

Launch day was no problem. I laughed at all those fools who stood in lines for hours and hours just to place a pre-order and again at those who waited on launch day itself. I had plenty of PS2 and GameCube titles to work through, not to mention DS games, why would I be in a rush to get the Wii? All I cared about was Brawl, so again, why rush?

The next day? Panic. I inexplicably absolutely needed to have one. eBay was tempting. My (at the time future) brother-in-law took that approach, but me, ever the frugal gamer, I went to store after store after store, made phone call after phone call after phone call, for days and days and days. I’m sure I wasted more gas than was worth it that I should have gotten one on eBay anyway.

I was visiting family over Christmas and everyone knew I wanted one but of course never saw them on the shelves, not that I asked them to try; this was my own problem. A few days after Christmas and another defeated attempt at a Wal*Mart and Toys’R'Us I was headed home, with my younger brother this time; we passed by a Target and on a whim decided to turn around and scope it out.

I expected nothing. I figured I’d simply have to hold on to the spare Wii Remote and Nunchuck I bought in advance because I knew THOSE were selling out too. My brother of course ran down to the electronics department(silly 12 year olds) as I coolly shuffled over predicting disappointment again and of course, I was wrong (thank god!) jackpot! A dozen boxes full of Wii. Plus, a copy of Zelda for $34. I wasn’t planning on getting the game, but how could I turn that price down. Although, in that regard, I might have been better off… I STILL haven’t finished Twilight Princess. I blame Guitar Hero.

So that’s my story. On a related note, my story for Brawl is much less interesting because I pre-ordered that time. The 24 hours that followed included 16 hours of gameplay, 4 hours of sleep, and 4 hours of food, energy drinks, and giddiness. =]

I work at Bestbuy. I specificly asked to work late the night before launch and asked for launch day off. I got out of work that night, walked out of the building and right in line where a couple friends were saving me a spot.

We all played DS games and watched a couple movies and southpark on a laptop.

I even talked someone in coming out at 3am just to go to Tim Hortons and pick up coffee and donuts for us.

Isn’t ironic that the Xbox’s NXE came out today?
A not-so-subtle attack on Wii, what with the whole avatar thing and whatnot.

@ dantendo – unplug it or hold down the power button.
