Iwata Not a Fan of Price Drops

According to an interview, [Nintendo] President Iwata says he’s not a fan of price drops.  Honestly, I don’t see a reason for dropping the price of the Wii just yet.  It’s still flying off the shelves at its current price.  Why lower it?  However, Iwata’s reasoning goes beyond that simple truth.

This is my personal thinking, but when the model’s price-tag drops over time, manufacturers are telling consumers it’s better to wait, and I’ve always thought that was a mistake.

If you really think about it, isn’t this true?  When I see a price drop on a console, my mind now goes to “when will they release the next one?”  Granted, I have been buying my Nintendo consoles on launch day or close to, but I can definitely understand this point-of-view from those who wait to buy their video games.

Yeah, but the flipside of that is that a lot more people will buy console at a lower price. It hasn’t affected the Wii or DS too much, as they’re reasonably priced to begin with. But, I doubt the 360 and PS3 would have half the sales they’ve had if they’d kept the launch prices, just as the PS2 is still selling due to it’s extremely low price.

I bought a 360 Elite recently, and I know I would NOT have bought it at the launch price. No console is worth that much money to me, but I was happy to buy it when it entered my price range. I bought the Wii at launch, and I thought the price was good for that too…

Yes, I agree. If Nintendo did not price its products reasonably at the beginning, it might be a different story.
