Wii Firmware Update blocks Homebrew October 24, 2008

A recent Wii Firmware Update has stopped homebrew from working apparently. The update added a few small things to the Japanese Wii Shop Channel, mainly renaming Wii Points to Nintendo Points, and didn’t really do too much elsewhere. But now we know that it had a hidden agenda. If you already have the Homebrew Channel installed on your Wii, you should be fine, but if anyone wants to take part in homebrew now, they won’t be able to. Having said that, workarounds have been created for past updates, so it’s possible that something will be figured out to allow homebrew once again.

The update changed a couple things up in the US Shot Channel. We don’t have Nintendo Points yet, but the spot that used to tell what controllers worked has been replaced by a button, which takes you to a separate screen explaining it. That’s all I’ve noticed so far.

We already know every new firmware update overwrites “save data”. But the matter is how do we know when the Homebrew channel will overcome the new updates.
