RUMOR: More details on new DS model September 30, 2008

DS Village claims that a source within Nintendo has revealed that the new DS model is indeed real and has a few more details. The software developer within Nintendo that they spoke to says he has seen the new DS model. Below are the tidbits he revealed:

- Larger and higher-resolution screens
- Still has a 4:3 display and not widescreen
- Has some new features, like the camera
- Camera is of “fairly high resolution” and is pointed away from the player

The developer said “he and his colleagues had fun pointing the camera at background objects so as to make it appear that the screens of the DS were transparent.” This sounds real enough to me and fits what we already know about the new DS model. Tomorrow night can’t come soon enough! (Note: The above picture is from a previous camera attachment for the DS, not of the new DS model)

Well almost... The Game Boy Light is the only one Nintendo never bothered to port... After all, all it was is a Game Boy Pocket with a frontlit screen...

It didn't even come in a normal case but rather a cheap plastic enclosure like those old tiger electronics handheld monochrome games...

But yah for the most part Nintendo has been good about releasing there stuff everywhere...

This DS just seems like something that would only ever need any of these rumored features in a place like tokyo or NY...

Most parts of the world would never need connectivity for subway train systems, And most people (That can afford a DS) likely already own a digital camera or a Cell Phone that can take photos if they are interested in taking pictures...

All this DS would really do for most of us is allow people to play whatever games there are that require the camera...

And even that is something that an adapter can help people do without the need to buy yet another DS...

Every handheld, as far as I know, has been released in the US as well. Of course, Japan does get other colors and things like that, but as far as the actual handhelds go, so far every single one has come to the US.

Better rez is always a nice thing but I can't help but get this Game Boy Light kinda feel about this thing...

Outside of Japan I really don't see the appeal unless the rumors of some form of SD Card integration turn out to be true... (Which could very likely lead to some Virtual Console games coming to the DS)

But even then a Slot 1 adapter could easily enough be made by Nintendo to do the same without forcing people to buy a whole new unit altogether...

I just can't see this coming outside of Japan any time soon... Nintendo knows that frequent hardware updates only serve to betray customer loyalty in most regions... (The Game Boy Micro is the most recent example of that)

The Micro sold quite well in Japan as the device was much more sleek looking & easy to carry around in small pocket space's and even on key chains without worry because of the systems easily to replace face plate...

But outside of Japan people mostly looked at it as some kind of competing device with cell phone games... Only instead of being able to talk or text or take pictures or even play several games at once through download services, all it could do is play one big (by soccer mom standards) game at a time...

And considering that people where buying it to save on pocket space the idea of carrying several games around with you kinda defeated it's own purpose...

That being said this new DS doesn't look to be anything like that but rather the opposite, It's competing with other devices that most people already own... Which is an equally bad formula for sales in most of the world...
