Could these be the new screens from the new DS model [UPDATED AGAIN]

null

I have no idea how credible this is, but I figured I’d post it anyways. Some Japanese site known as Byokan Sunday posted two images of what are supposedly the new slightly larger screens from the new DS model. Of course, it’s pretty hard to tell since there’s nothing to compare them too, but I figured it would be interesting to post anyways. Check out the other picture after the jump.

[UPDATE 2] I have some clarification. Apparently the top screen is 3 inches like the DS Lite, while the bottom screen is 3.25 inches. Also, this website had these images up about a week before Nikkei’s article.

[UPDATE] I forgot to mention that the site says that the screen size is now 3.25 inches instead of 3 inches. It’s not widescreen, but that also means that it shouldn’t screw up any aspect ratios for previous DS titles. I’ll keep you posted on the latest regarding the new DS model.

eh, i think if they come out with a new ds model it will minimize gap between the screens

  • howser

i agree. they’ve got to find a way to get rid of that space! it would make the new ds a great portable movie player (sideways you’ve got widescreen) and vastly improve games that use both screens as one playing field — contra 4, for example.

Unfortunately many MANY games now count on that gap being there… They can’t change that fact without screwing up the way most games look…

Imagine playing Sonic Rush or Zelda Phantom Hourglass with a lesser or even no gap & you’ll easily see why it wouldn’t work unless they went through the painstaking task of remaking several of the DS’ better games & somehow get people to buy them again…

that may be true; however, many games are designed to pretend the space is not there. some graphics that span both screens look vertically stretched (too tall) because they don’t account for it. also, in some games, the sprites immediately move from one screen to the other, which is a b$%^& if you’re trying to aim at something on the top screen — the aiming lines aren’t straight. makes me feel like i’m calculating the diffraction of light through water or something…
