Quick Impressions: Kirby Super Star Ultra

null

Hey everyone, I got my hands on Kirby Super Star Ultra and I decided to write up some quick impressions on the title. I’ll be posting some quick impressions on more games in the future, so look for those (I just got Sonic Chronicles, so look for impressions on that title soon). Anyways, on to Kirby Super Star Ultra. I’ve gotten through a few parts of the game, and overall it’s great. It’s quite fun to play and sounds great as well (Kirby music rocks).

Kirby Super Star Ultra is essentially the SNES title Kirby Super Star, but with more game modes. This game adds two new sub-games (Revenge of the King and Meta Knightmare Ultra), as well as three mini-games (Kirby Card Swipe, Kirby on the Draw, and Snack Tracks) that utilize the touch screen. Not only that but this game also has two new Arena modes, known as Helper to Hero and The True Arena. Basically, what all of that means is there’s plenty of fun to be had in this game. There’s not much there to play when you start out, so I haven’t gotten to play much of it, but I’ll let you know what I thought of the modes I did get to play. Hit the jump for my impressions.

Seeing as how I’ve only played a few Kirby titles, I started out by playing the Spring Breeze mode, which is perfect for beginners. It wasn’t really a challenge, but it was a lot of fun to play. I loved trying out all the different copy abilities (I saw Fire, Hammer, Sword, Cutter, Beam, and many more). Another game mode I played was Dyna Blade, which was basically the same type of game as Spring Breeze but slightly more challenging. I enjoyed this mode a lot and started playing it again after I beat it. The boss battles in both modes are quite easy, and the only one that provided me with a slight challenge was the Dyna Blade boss battle.

I tried out The Great Cave Offensive mode as well, though I gave up after I played for a little while. I was stuck and I got bored with that mode. You’re supposed to find all of the treasure chests spread out throughout the cave. Since there’s 60 to find, it’s quite a task, and I didn’t have enough patience to continue with it. I also played Gourmet Race, which has you racing King Dedede while trying to collect the most food. I played it once and won. It was fun, I must say, and King Dedede does run fast. But in the end, I liked the Spring Breeze and Dyna Blade modes the best. I haven’t unlocked anymore modes, and I assume I get them by beating The Great Cave Offensive, so maybe I’ll have to force myself through that mode.

I also played the three mini-games in the game. All three of them utilize the touch screen on the DS, which makes it interesting. And they all also have three difficulty levels so there’s a fit for everyone. Kirby Card Swipe has you trying to match a card on the bottom screen to the one on the top screen, which can be challenging at higher difficulties. Kirby on the Draw has you trying to hit targets to score points, and it’s a bit harder than it seems due to the bombs that appear instead of targets (hitting them makes you lose points). This was my favorite of the three mini-games, and I intend to play more of it soon. Lastly, the other min-game is Snack Tracks, which is my least favorite. You have to stop Kirby from eating any bugs, rocks, or bombs and it can get frustrating pretty easily due to the speed of the game. It’s even worse at higher difficulties with everything coming at you so fast.

All in all, from what I got to play of the game so far, it’s a lot of fun. I’m hoping to unlock more modes so I can write more impressions of the game, but so far it’s mostly fun. Personally, I didn’t like The Great Cave Offensive, but I think there are others that will enjoy it. The levels that are like the typical Kirby games, like Spring Breeze and Dyna Blade, are my favorite parts of the game and are still fun to play over and over. From what I’ve played so far, I’d recommend the title. I don’t know if it’s an instant buy type of game, but it seems like it’s worth a buy, or at least a rent.

@ JamesT – This game came out this week. And Nintendo gave Mickey Wii Fit, because of his “Wii Sports Experiment.” (And he runs this site, which means he sometimes gets free stuff and games early for being Nintendo press.)
