Pokemon Platinum Info Blowout! (Will be updated as more news comes)

null

Some people now have their hands on a copy of the Japanese version of Pokemon Platinum, and that means we’re going to get lots of news. So, I thought I would try and compile all of the news and make one big news post about it. Of course, it’s going to be quite long, so you’ll have to hit the jump to read all about Rotom’s new forms (yes, it’s now confirmed), and more!

null

First off, we now know that the rumors were true. The mystery Pokemon are indeed new forms of the Pokemon, Rotom. Pokemon Platinum comes with a small pamphlet that shows Rotom’s new forms. The pamphlet only shows one of Rotom’s new forms though, so there are five different pamphlets. Its random as to which pamphlet you’ll get with the game. But how does Rotom change forms? Well, once you catch a Rotom at the Old Chateau, you can then use the Secret Key (obtained via Mystery Gift in Japan) to change its form. Rotom’s form changes depending on where the Secret Key is used. And in case you were wondering, all of Rotom’s new forms are Electric/Ghost type. You can see their sprites above or see their pictures below.

null
One of Rotom’s new forms is the Frost Forme (All Pokemon with alternate forms have the “forme” spelling if you didn’t know). Rotom Frost Forme is able to learn Blizzard, and you can see a picture of it above. What’s interesting is that this form of Rotom looks like a fridge. We know that the Rotom we know from Diamond and Pearl likes TV’s (as you can see here), so it’s interesting that the Rotom Frost Forme is shaped like a fridge.

null
Rotom Wash Forme seems to resemble a washing machine. This form of Rotom can use Hydro Pump.

null
The Spin Forme of Rotom resembles a fan, and it can use the attack Air Slash.

null
Rotom Cut Forme is the name of this form of Rotom. It resembles a lawn mower and knows the attack Leaf Storm.

null
And the final new form of Rotom, known as Rotom Oven Forme, looks like a toaster. This form is able to use Overheat.

Here are some random tidbits regarding Pokemon Platinum:

  • The first 151 Pokemon in the Sinnoh Dex have the same number as from Diamond/Pearl
  • The following Pokemon have the following numbers: Rotom (152), Gligar (153), Gliscor (154), Nosepass (155), Probopass (156), Ralts (157), Kirlia (158), Gardevoir (159), Gallade (160), Lickitung (161), Lickilicky (162), Eevee (163), Vaporeon (164), Jolteon (165), Flareon (166), Espeon (167), Umbreon (168), Leafeon (169), Glaceon (170), Swablu (171), Altaria (172), Togepi (173), Togetic (174), Togekiss (175), Houndour (176), Houndoom (177), Magnemite (178), Magneton (179), Magnezone (180), Tangela (181), Tangrowth (182), Yanma (183), Yanmega (184), Tropius (185), Rhyhorn (186), Rhydon (187), Rhyperior (188), Duskull (189), Dusclops (190), Dusknoir (191), Porygon (192), Porygon2 (193), Porygon-Z (194), Scyther (195), Scizor (196), Elekid (197), Electabuzz (198), Electivire (199), Magby (200), Magmar (201), Magmortar (202), Swinub (203), Piloswine (204), Mamoswine (205), Absol (209)
  • Shaymin, Darkrai, and Regigigas are not in the Sinnoh Dex
  • Non-4th gen Pokemon that are not in the Sinnoh Dex don’t get new sprites
  • Giratina Origin Forme’s stats: HP 150, Attack 120, Defense 100, Speed 90, Special Attack 120, Special Defense 100
  • Shaymin Sky Forme’s stats: HP 100, Attack 103, Defense 75, Speed 127, Special Attack 120, Special Defense 75
  • Rotom’s new forms (all have the same stats): HP 50, Attack 65, Defense 107, Speed 86, Special Attack 105, Special Defense 107
  • The touch screen layout is different than in Diamond and Pearl. The top left of the touch screen shows how many Pokemon you have and the top right shows how many Pokemon your opponent has. The attack buttons are beneath them.
  • The location name bar has a faint city/town background now.
  • When you opponent sends out a Pokemon in Diamond and Pearl, it seemed like there was a bit of a delay for the Pokemon to be sent out. In Platinum, that delay seems to be gone.
  • The Poketch now has up and down scroll buttons, so you don’t have to scroll all the way through like in Diamond and Pearl.
  • In a battle, the bottom screen changes color during a battle depending on where the battle takes place. So, if the battle is in grass, the background is green. In a cave, it’s purple.
  • When you fight a Gym Leader, the sprites that appear before a battle are of higher quality instead of just bigger, pixelated version of their regular sprites. Gym Leaders now also have animated sprites.
  • Here are some sprites of the Pokemon: nullnullnullnullnullnullnull
  • The following Pokemon appear to be absent from Pokemon Platinum (meaning they are exclusive to D/P): Misdreavus, Mismagius, Murkrow, Honchkrow, Glameow, Purugly, Stunky, Skuntank, Bonsly, Sudowoodo, Mime Jr., Mr. Mime (There may be more missing, but that’s all we know so far).
  • Nosepass is found on Mt. Coronet, though in D/P it was found after the Elite 4 only.
  • Ralts is found on Route 207.
  • There are tents in the Breeding Center. You see a Buneary run in and out of it.
  • Some Pokemon that were previously found after you got the National Dex are found throughout Sinnoh. Some examples are Snorunt in the Lake Acuity area and Duskull near the Lost Tower.
  • The basement of the Pokemon Center has two Wi-Fi counters. The one on the right is for trading and battling, while the one on th eleft is for the Wi-Fi Plaza, which has minigames. The area for trading and battling is set up like the Union Room and shows the sprites of all of your friends that are currently online. You can connect to them by talking to their trainer sprite or you can check their Trainer Card by clicking on their name on the touch screen. You can also turn Voice Chat on or off by hitting the X button.
  • The Wi-Fi menu graphics has been changed and it now has an image of Pachirisu and Pikachu. The Pal Pad also has bigger numbers and is easier to use.
  • Golduck’s beak is now outlined in red.
  • There’s a guy in Veilstone that tells you what type your Hidden Power is.
  • Tropius and Tangela are now found in the Safari Zone.

Here are all of the changes from the story in Pokemon Platinum:

  • Game intro: The Gamefreak logo, Pokemon logo, View of Sinnoh, the detective Handsome and the new Team Galactic Scientist, the male and female characters running, the starters in various evolutionary forms with Toreterra using Leaf Storm and Empoleon using Bubblebeam, Cyrus, Giratina’s eyes and mouth shown in the Torn World, and then Giratina Origine Form on the screen.
  • Professor Rowan’s intro is the same, but with a few minor changes. Instead of Munchlax, this time Buneary comes out of the Pokeball. You also see the male and female characters and the rival in their new clothes.
  • The TV doesn’t have a news report on Red Gyarados this time. Instead, it has a report about Professor Rowan returning from Kanto, and it says he is wondering “since when have we humans been surrounded by Pokemon”. There’s also different music during the report.
  • The rival then appears in your room, and says to go to Professor Rowan to get your starter Pokemon and he checks the computer for something.
  • Twinleaf Town seems to have more snow.
  • You then go to your rival’s house and he forgets his journal, like in Diamond/Pearl. The two of you then go to Professor Rowan outside of Twinleaf Town.
  • Professor Rowan comes from the direction of the lake, and you and your rival talk to him about Pokemon. Dawn approaches with Professor Rowan’s suitcase and then Rowan offers you a Pokemon. You choose between Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup, and the rival picks whatever you are weak against as usual.
  • Professor Rowan and Dawn leave, and as usual, you battle your rival.
  • Once you fight your rival, you appear in your house. Your mom gives you the Running Shoes.
  • When you try and leave Twinleaf Town, your rival stops you. He wants to go to Lake Valor to capture the Mesprit for Professor Rowan
  • When you enter, the screen pans to the grass area that Dawn and Professor Rowan were at in Diamond and Pearl. You see Cyrus who says something about Mesprit and then leaves. You then hear Mesprit’s cry, but your rival realizes he has no Pokeball so he runs off.
  • When you arrive in Sandgem Town, Dawn stops you. She takes you to Professor Rowan’s lab and your rival comes out of the building. He talks a bit and then leaves. Dawn takes you inside to Professor Rowan, who examines your Pokemon. He then gives you a Pokedex.
  • Then you exit the lab and Dawn and Professor Rowan talk. You are given TM27 (Return Attack) by Professor Rowan. Dawn escorts you throughout Sandgem Town and shows you the important places, like the Pokemon Center and the PokeMart. Now you begin your journey.
  • At this point, everything seems pretty much the same. So, everything from now on will only be the changes from Diamond and Pearl. Please note that things may be out of order from now on as well, though I will try my best to put things in order.
  • When you get to Jubilife City, Dawn takes you to the detective named Handsome. He hides behind a lamp post, runs around, and then approaches you. He gives you the Battle Recorder (allows you to record your battles). He looks around to see if anyone is listening to what he’s saying, and then runs off.
  • When you face your rival again on Route 203, he stomps his hands and feet like he’s excited.
  • Roark has the same Pokemon from D/P I believe. He has a Lvl. 12 Geodude, a Lvl. 12 Onix, and a Lvl. 14 Cranidos. Once you win, he gives you TM76 (Stealth Rock).
  • The detective Handsome warns you about some “suspicious adults” when you go back to Jubilife City. After that, you fight Team Galactic in a double battle. In Platinum, the Galactic grunts use Glameow and Stunky (they used Zubat and Wurmple in D/P).
  • In Floaroma Town, The Galactic grunts have different Pokemon from D/P, and they’re also at higher levels. So, just like all third games in a generation, Platinum is slightly harder than D/P.
  • Once you defeat Mars at the Valley Windworks, Handsome appears to investigate.
  • When you first arrive in Eterna City, you meet Cynthia for the first time and she gives you the HM for Cut.
  • In Eterna City, your rival takes you to the statue of a legendary Pokemon. In Diamond, the statue was of Dialga and in Pearl, it was Palkia. In Platinum however, the statue is of Palkia. Cyrus also appears and when he sees you, he says a few words and then leaves.
  • The gym in Eterna City is completely different. There are obstacles, such as hedges and water spouts that block the path to Gardenia. You have to defeat the four trainers in the gym because defeating them causes a central walkway to rotate, gradually bridging the path to Gardenia. Their Pokemon are the same from D/P, but are higher levels.
  • Gardenia’s team is slightly different than in D/P. Her team consists of a Lvl. 20 Turtwig (Reflect, Razor Leaf, Grass Knot, Sunny Day), a Lvl. 20 Cherrim (Magic Leaf, Grass Knot, Safeguard, Leech Seed), and a Lvl. 22 Roserade (Stun Spore, Magic Leaf, Grass Knot, Poison Sting) with a Sitrus Berry. In D/P, she has a Cherubi, but instead she has a Cherrim in this game. Once she is defeated, she gives you TM86 (Grass Knot).
  • When you enter the Team Galactic base in Eterna City, you see Handsome, who is disguised as a Galactic grunt. He warns you that half of the staircases in the base lead to ambushes, and then resumes his role as guard.
  • The Galactic grunts in the Eterna base now use Croagunk and Stunky, rather than Wurmple and Silcoon.
  • Jupiter’s team is the same, except they are a higher level.
  • Once you beat Jupiter, you receive Upgrade (the item used to evolve Porygon). Upgrade was available after you beat the Elite 4 in D/P.
  • Before you leave Eterna City, you meet Cynthia again after beating Jupiter. She gives you an egg, which later hatches into a Togepi. And because you get an egg from Cynthia, you don’t get an egg from
  • Cyrus appears again at Mt. Coronet.
  • Amity Square received a graphical update. There’s a sign over its entrance that features Psyduck, Torchic, and Drifblim. Also, the huts in Amity Square are like warp pads that warp you from one place to another.
  • Bebe in Hearthome City gives you a Lvl. 20 Eevee right away this time. Eevee is not available in the wild.
  • The southern gate of Hearthome City is blocked by a reporter, so you can’t go to Pastoria City before you go to Veilstone City, like you could in D/P.
  • Once you talk to Fantina in the Contest Hall, the Hearthome Gym opens up right away, unlike D/P. The gym is pitch black, but the trainers in the gym have flashlights. If a trainer catches you in his light, you have to fight them. There are multiple doors inside the gym and each door has a symbol on it. Only one door leads to the next room, while the rest teleport you back to the entrance. To figure out which door is right, you have to search each room for a symbol, which is in blue, and then match it to a symbol on the door, which is in red. Once you’ve gone through that puzzle, you can battle Fantina.
  • Fantina has a new team, and it includes a Lvl. 24 Duskull, a Lvl. 24 Haunter, and a Lvl. 26 Mismagius. When defeated, she gives you TM65 (Shadow Claw).
  • Right before you challenge the Veilstone Gyme, Crasher Wake appears.
  • The Veilstone Gym is full of exercise equipment. To reach the gym leader, you have to swing punching bags into the piles of junk to clear a pathway. The gym leader, Maylene, has a Meditite, Machoke, and Lucario. Once defeated, she’ll give you TM60 (Drain Punch).
  • Usually, the third game in a generation has more of a selection on prizes at the Game Corner, but this time it seems they’re the same as in D/P.
  • When you try and get Dawn’s Pokedex back from Team Galactic, Handsome appears again. Dawn calls him “That weirdo from Jubilife”. Handsome says she is being rude. Once Dawn leaves, Handsome says he heard rumors about Team Galactic when he was undercover in the Game Corner, and suggests that you go to Pastoria.
  • In Pastoria City, there’s a Croagunk billboard. You can go behind it and your face will appear on Croagunk’s body. It’s like one of those muscle boards that you can go behind and it makes it look like your face is on a bodybuilder’s body.
  • The Pastoria Gym is the same as in D/P. Wake has a Lvl. 33 Gyarados, a Lvl. 34 Quagsire, and a Lvl. 37 Floatsel. He gives you TM55 (Brine) once he is defeated
  • After fighting Wake, you run into your rival outside the Pastoria Gym. In Diamond and Pearl, you battle your rival, but in Platinum, Wake overhears the two of you talking and comes outside. He mentions that the rival is just like his father, and then the conversation gets interrupted by a loudnoise. A Team Galactic grunt runs out of the Great Marsh, laughing about the bomb he planted. You chase after the fleeing Galactic grunt, while Wake and your rival stay behind to take care of the bomb. Eventually, Handsome joins the hunt. It’s a similar sequence to that of D/P, but with more of a narrative. Once the Galactic grunt is defeated, your rival appears and says that everything is under control in the Great Marsh. Cynthia then gives you the SecretPotion, just like in D/P.
  • Cyrus appears inside the cave in Celestic Town. In D/P, he left after talking to you, but in Platinum, he attacks you and you have to fight him. He has a Lvl. 34 Sneasel, a Lvl. 34 Golbat, and a Lvl. 36 Murkrow. After you defeat him, Cynthia tells you to go to Canaclave City. Normally she gives this lecture after you beat Fantina, but since the Gym order is different in Platinum, this sequence is also altered.
  • In Canaclave, you meet your rival and you fight him. His Pokemon are stronger than they were in D/P. His starter Pokemon is Lvl. 38 and all of his Pokemon are fully evolved.
  • The Canaclave Gym is basically the same as in D/P, but with a few minor changes. The same elevator puzzle is present. But, there are now more Onix and less Magnemite.
  • The gym leader, Byron, has a Lvl. 37 Magneton, a Lvl. 38 Steelix, and a Lvl. 41 Bastiodon. He gives you TM91 (Flash Cannon) when he is defeated.
  • The Magmarizer can be found lying on the ground on Route 214, which makes it much easier to obtain than in D/P.
  • Saturn has a Lvl. 38 Golbat, Lvl. 40 Toxicroak, and Lvl. 38 Bronzong.
  • At Lake Verity, Mars has a Lvl. 38 Golbat, a Lvl. 38 Bronzor, and a Lvl. 40 Purugly.
  • Toward the exit of Mt. Coronet heading to Route 216, there is an extra cavern with a Nevermeltice in the center.
  • On Route 216, there is a Trainer with a Tropius.
  • The Snowpoint Gym seems to be the same as in D/P. You still have to slide around and break the snowballs to battle Candice.
  • Candice has a Lvl. 40 Sneasel, a Lvl. 40 Piloswine, a Lvl. 42 Abomasnow, and a Lvl. 44 Froslass. She gives you TM72 (Avalanche) for defeating her.
  • When you go back to Veilstone to explore Team Galactic’s base, Handsome appears again. He has the missing Warehouse Key, and he runs in ahead of you leaving the door open.
  • HM05 is found at the Unown Ruins.
  • In the Elite 4, you face Aaron, Bertha, Flint, and Lucian. The Elite 4 Champion that you face is Cynthia.
  • Aaron has Bug type Pokemon: Lvl. 49 Yanmega, Lvl. 49 Scizor, Lvl. 50 Vespiquen, Lvl. 51 Heracross, and a Lvl. 53 Drapion
  • Bertha has Ground type Pokemon: Lvl. 50 Whiscash, Lvl. 53 Gliscor, Lvl. 52 Hippowndon, and a Lvl. 52 Golem, and a Lvl. 55 Rhyperior
  • Flint has Fire type Pokemon: Lvl. 52 Houndoom, Lvl. 55 Flareon, Lvl. 53 Rapidash, Lvl. 55 Infernape, and a Lvl. 57 Magmortar
  • Lucian has Psychic type Pokemon: Lvl. 53 Mr. Mime,Lvl. 54 Espeon, Lvl. 54 Bronzong, Lvl. 56 Alakazam, and a Lvl. 59 Gallade
  • Cynthia has the following Pokemon: Lvl. 58 Spiritomb, Lvl. 58 Roserade, Lvl. 60 Togekiss, Lvl. 60 Lucario, Lvl. 58 Milotic, and a Lvl. 62 Garchomp
