Microsoft admits that they may not beat Nintendo

Looks like Nintendo’s success is just too much for Microsoft. Don Mattrick, the Senior Vice President of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, had this to say regarding Nintendo:

“I’m not at a point where I can say we’re going to beat Nintendo. We will sell more consoles this generation than Sony.”

So, Microsoft admits that they may not be able to be #1 this generation, but is confident they can beat Sony. This isn’t the type of thing you’d hear from a company like this, so I’m kind of surprised.

    Well if you could sell a wii to a friend who would pay $300 which includes a bunch of VC games and then go get a 360 and save money. But if I save up enough I’ll get both :D

    I’m glad that the Wii has sold so well and has put Nintendo back on the map in a big way, but lets’ be honest….the 360 has much better games. Ninetendo wins hardware wise hands down, but my god the software is just horrible. I still play my gamecube games more than I play wii games.

    There are some truly great games for the Waggle Box but I do agree with you there Faeker, as things currently stand Nintendo has WAY to few triple A titles this generation…

    Unfortunately Nintendo themselves (with a handful of exceptions) seam to be the only ones that can actually handle making a so called “casual” game without making it suck way beyond the point of usability…

    So while the Brickmaster 2000 is able to focus completely on the “hardcore” crowd (because no one really expects anything different from them) Nintendo is stuck having to make most of the good games for their console themselves…

    And as a result this means less Mario & Zelda, And more Mii’s doing whatever the hell it is they do…

    But I don’t know about you, but to me this statement reads more like a confession that we won’t be seeing much more of the Brickmaster 2000 in the near future…

    Microsoft’s console “generation” is (like anything else microsoft) over when they say it is…

    I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they decided to “move on ahead” to the next “generation” late next year just in time for the Grillstation to finally start to look like its picking up in popularity…

    You know… So they could take credit for it and call the Brickmaster’s run a smashing success which should help with whatever crap it is their going to try to sell us next…

    ummm, has anyone here read deception point by dan brown? well i mean microsoft could be trciking us into a false sense of security, they may have a something new, and waiting for JUST the right time to unveil it, unfortunately i dont have a wii or a 360 X[ (stupid brothers and stupid college) but regardless, microsoft COULD be tricking nintendo, who knows…we just have to wait.

    It’s amazing that nintendo still has such a fanboy-fanbase. Sorry kids – it doesn’t matter if nintendo ‘wins’. You’re still only kids with a gaming system meant for party-games only. They will not cater to the real gamer in you. Besides, any real gamer has all the consoles. Even though the Wii has sold a lot, how are any of you okay with being the treated the way we are by nintendo?

    Uh ender that logic of yours is kinda flawed… Badly… The reason is that Nintendo seldom to almost never (at this point) has made games for little kids…

    Most of their fans know that… Rather it’s far FAR more accurate to say they make family friendly games…

    Party games are among the more popular genders in that field…

    A family friendly game is actually FAR MORE LIKELY to be picked up by an adult with kids then it is the kids themselves…

    The parents would see the game as a fun activity to share with their kids, where as the kids themselves would probably want to play something with blood & violence simply because the act of doing something that their parents don’t want them to do makes them feel more independent… (Grown up)

    I don’t see how different it is to someone who supports a sports team, even when they will acknowledge that they’re playing sheisenhousen. Why? Because that’s what they’ve grown up with. Quite frankly, I don’t care if you don’t like Nintendo, DS or Wii. I love both of mine and wouldn’t sell them.

    Well said noodle, I buy the Nintendo brand because to me they’re like Mac’s…

    By that I mean It’s a gaming device that knows exactly what it’s supposed to do & everything else is just an afterthought…

    That is both a good & a bad thing in both the computer world & in the home entertainment market… But in the case of video game consoles it seems to have worked out for them this generation…

    I’ve always favored them for that because I know when I see Mario’s or Zelda’s name on a box my odds of dissatisfaction with the game are far FAR less then that of something i’ve never heard of before, or even something that I’ve only ever read about…

    Sure I like to adventure out into the unknown every once in a while… But I doubt I’ll ever be bold enough as to throw myself into the middle of a jungle that I can barley even tell where it begins & ends… Not when money is at stake at least… :p

    but the calibre of games on this system is nothing compared to the epic gaming library of the xbox. Sure, it may sell the most – but don’t forget, Mariah Carey out-sold Elvis Presley.

    You’re right, I responded in anger. I’m just so upset that Animal Crossing for the wii is considered a hard-core game.

    Anyone can play Wii Sports. But those that play it hardcore are those that try and get the highest score and constantly play it. You don’t have to be a hardcore gamer to play a game in a hardcore manner. I think what Reggie was saying was that even hardcore gamers can get a kick out of Animal Crossing. It was probably mistranslated or maybe he said it in a confusing way or something. There’s no way he could really think Animal Crossing is hardcore. But I can see how anyone, including a casual gamer, could play Animal Crossing in a hardcore way (basically being addicted to it). So I think that’s what he meant.
