Announcing the WiiNintendo podcast: The Wii-kly Fuse

It’s time to announce something that a few of us have been planning on the WiiNintendo forums for a while now. This Tuesday, at 9:30 pm est, will be recording its first podcast and it will be up on the site for all of you to hear on Wednesday hopefully. We’re calling this one Podcast Zero though in case we have technical difficulties and we can’t post it on the site. But, before we begin, we’d like to have your feedback. What do you want us to discuss? What special segments do you want us to have? Please post a comment or send me an email ([email protected]) with your suggestions. And just so you know, this date and time is temporary for now, so that could change.

What I can tell you are some of the things we decided to include in the podcast. The podcast is entitled “The Wii-kly Fuse”, which came from a combination of Nintendo’s Virtual Console and WiiWare Wii-kly Update and our forums, WiiFuse. The podcast crew currently includes two staff members from the main site (Charmy and I), as well as two big forum members (queenzelda and MegaOmegaMegaZetta). One of the moderators on the forums, Mazer, may also be joining us for the podcast. I am also in contact with Durffen from The Gamers’ Cafe, whom I previously worked with at Wii Live, to see if he is interested in joining us. And from time to time, we may even have some guests join us, like forum members, people from other sites, or even some of the readers. In short, we’re going to have a great crew.

But what matters most about a podcast is what we discuss. Every week, we’ll discuss the latest Wii and DS news, rumors, and more. We will also pick certain Nintendo-related topics and discuss them, so you may get to hear some interesting debates. And lastly, we will answer any reader questions. So if you want us to answer or discuss something, please post a comment or send me an email. That’s the basics of what we have planned, so please send us any suggestions you may have. And if anyone can make a banner, please let me know as well. Your feedback will help make The Wii-kly Fuse even better. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited!

UPDATE: It appears I was incorrect about mazer’s status on the site. Mazer does post on the main site and is an admin on the forums. And just to clarify a few things, the podcast will NOT be live. You will be able to hear it the day after it was recorded. We will record podcast #0 this Tuesday at 9:30 pm est and the podcast crew will consist of me, Charmy, MegaOmegaMegaZetta, queenzelda, and mazer.

    @Roth: Unfortunately, it’s not going to be shown live since we’re doing it over Skype. I don’t know of any way we can do it live. If you know of a way, please let me know and I’ll look into it. But what we might be able to do is have a trivia question at the end of a podcast and then people can submit their answer via email and we’ll announce the winner in the next podcast. I’d have to look into prizes and things as well then.

    @hattrick: What do you mean by hosting? We’re going to record it and then upload it probably onto sendspace. I’m trying to figure out a way to make the podcast live though.

    @Roth: We’re all in different locations, so it doesn’t make sense to do a live video stream. What I am going to look into though is a live audio stream so people can listen in. If anyone can find something like that, please let me know. And we will try to use the IRC Chat while we record the podcast if possible.

    @Max: Definitely one week you can join us, I’ll contact you regarding that in the future. As for itunes, we are looking into putting it up there, but we have to figure out how that’s going to work since none of us know how to.

    Just so you guys know, we’re going to have to change the time we record the podcast. Unfortunately, we can’t do anything after 5:30 pm and before 11 pm. I don’t know why, but it won’t let me. I’m going to talk to the podcast crew and we may have to do it at 5:30 one day, at least for now.

    @ MAX Thanks for that link. Putting the podcast on iTunes was the ONE idea I had, so I hope that it happens. I’m sure we would love to have you as a guest.

    What you should do is allow users to upload a short (1 minute max) .mp3 onto the Forums with questions, or topic ideas.

    @ DarkWish – It seems you’ve already been talking to others about the hosting question I was asking about (like where you are uploading it and playing it from). My experience podcasting is through Garage Band and putting it directly into iWeb, where iTunes then picks it up as an official podcast.

    @hattrick: Thanks, I’ll look into that. What I am planning to use right now is the site BlogTalkRadio, which will automatically record the podcasts and have them ready to listen to after its done. I will try and find a way to get them on itunes, but as far as listening to them, you will be able to do so from BlogTalkRadio.

    Okay everyone, bad news. I tested out the site I was going to use. As a host, the only way I can call in is to use my phone (which is not an option for various reasons) or to use my microphone and call through Skype. But since I’ll be calling through Skype, that means I will be charged so I can’t do that. So basically, I can’t host. If someone else in the podcast crew is willing to host, then we can go along with the podcast. If not, I don’t know what will happen.

    Webcomics, and they do podcasts. From memory they make a free call to each other on Skype, record it and then just host the .mp3

    Just record it, get it saved as mp3 and upload it somewhere, even forums.

    There’s a way to have multiple users in Ustream and Mogulus, but I guess it’s too complicated.
    A Stickam private chat room may be the way to go.. just as long as the viewers know the password ahead of time.

    I prefer the podcast idea which usually means you listen to it later, rather than live. If you had user that could just join and stuff in the podcast, then it’d become more like Teamspeak. The other idea, is that if you do use Skype, you do a conference call just say with the three hosts. One of the hosts is in IM with a guest and then you call the guest.

    Okay everyone, we’re going back to the original idea. It will NOT be available to listen live. There’s too many issues that arise if we try and do that. As Noodle93 suggested, you will be able to upload short (max of 1 minute) questions or topic ideas in mp3 format. We will play them on the podcast at the end and answer them. Or you can just submit the question online via email or in a topic on the forums that I will create. This Tuesday at 9:30 pm est, we will record it and then I’ll upload it onto the site on Wednesday. Note: This is not the final time and day that we will be doing this podcast from now on, it’s only temporary for this week.
