Chrono Trigger heads to the DS

Well, no one expected this one. People have brought up the idea across several internet forums and gushed immensely over the idea. Square-Enix finally figured there would be a lot of money in this, so they did it. Chrono Trigger, a SNES god-like classic, is heading for new life on the Nintendo DS.

This clipping from the latest JUMP magazine confirms the chaos:

No one should worry as to whether or not this is a remake. It is an “enhanced” port. More details will be available on July 7th through both of Square-Enix’s Japanese and North American teaser sites, when those mighty, mighty (mighty!) clocks stop ticking. The game is slated for a Winter 2008 release.

    Anyone think there’s any logic behind hoping for a WiiWare release of some classics?… I say WiiWare instead of VC, because they’re updating them and they aren’t just the same classics.

    Well, the logic is WiiWare is for new games (from 2007+), while Virtual Console is for past titles from the old systems. The Nintendo DS is the right place for Chrono Trigger because the platforms accepts both old and new titles.

    It’s true that the upcoming Chrono Trigger is a direct port with added features such as a new dungeon where you can multiplayer battle your friends wirelessly on multiple DS systems. Plus it’s portable, so it’s all good. \:D/

    If it were to be on WiiWare, they’d have to reprogram the local multiplayer for up to 4P. Online features would take even longer to develop for a stable experience.
