Wii DVD Player Put on Hold June 29, 2008

Reports from Nintendo today uncover that the Wii will not begin to have a DVD ready system. Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s President, had this to say, “With supply constraints [of the Wii] continuing worldwide, the priority is on the current model.”
Personally I could care less if the Wii had a built in DVD player. I am assuming it wouldn’t be a HD DVD player so I would have no use for it. For those it need of a DVD player, you can find decent ones anywhere from 10 to 50 dollars.

Nintendo have said they want to make people turn on the Wii every day. One thing that would make people use it more would be improving how it plays media. I’m not sure why they’re taking so long to make it play DVDs and update the Photo Channel so does a better job of playing music and video, they must know that although it’s not something essential many people would like it. As they’ll have to pay licensing fees, perhaps making codecs available from the shop would be a way to do it.

Codecs available from shop actualy sounds like a pretty decent idea, never thought of that.

All they need is a firmware update to enable the support for DVD for those who already own the console. It’s just that there’s not a demand for that feature. The same goes to CD/MP3 playing.
The new SKUs would already be pre-enabled to play them.
I’m just curious when they’ll add more features to the Mii, Photo Channel, and perhaps the Internet Channel.
I want to be able to send my edited photos to SD more than only just posting it to the message board.

This seems like a waste of time. I don’t want an all-in-one device, all they are good at is overheating. Can we stick with making the best games in the world?

Yeah this is what I have been telling my friends. I figured they could release a firmware update and have like a DVD channel. I don’t care if its not in HD or Blueray. I only by regular dvds anyway.

couldn’t they make a external DVD player for the Wii and send software that can see the DVD player connected in the USB port on the Wii

well i think the wii should have a dvd enabled feature on it..all the other consoles do; or make a dvd player accessory that can connect to the wii to play them.
but i am guessing nintendo prides itself in the only console manufacturer that doesn’t have dvd playback on it. i am sure with enough demands for it, some company will manufacture, if not nintendo, a dvd player for it.
