EA Dev on Console MMOs: "The best chance of someone doing something like that is Nintendo"

CVG reported parts of an interview with EA Mythic director, Paul Barnett. I think you will find it rather interesting. And, ahead of time: Yes, I created the images in this post. Pretty pathetic, eh?

Ok, on to the important part:

“The number-one problem of a developer of an MMO these days is it’s very hard to be creative and keep your eye on the target when almost everyone has only ever played one of these games and it dominates their thinking,” he told CVG.

A successful console MMO would have to different, he says. “You would have to build something very console centric from the get-go. I think probably the best chance of someone doing something like that is Nintendo – doing
something crazy that no one expects.”
He went on to say that the secret to a good console MMO lies somewhere within Rock Band. “The best example I can find for a perpetual online console game is Rock Band, with it Xbox Live community store. It’s somewhere in there. I don’t know what it is, but that’s perhaps the closest I’ve seen to convincing console people to do things together, to do things online, to do things that cost money, to earn income.
Why doesn’t he give it a go? Simple: “I wouldn’t know how to do it,” admits Barnett.

I changed the MarioBro image to squeeze in an “s”. I am not too sure whether I like it better with or without it, though… here is the original:

I could think of 10 ORGINAIL MMO’S for nintendo but I have time for one pitch

Pokemon Universe- Create and customize your Pokemon Trainer. Start your journey. Travel the Pokemon universe with your friends. Fight and Collect over 600 Pokemon in 3D. Go on quest like Save the pokemon center or stop the tainted Rayquaza. Worldwide Tourney’s and Contest for all levels 5 times a day every Day. If you have a DS with a copy of (new Pokemon universe DS game) you can load your stats and you can play even if you out and about. and when your home transfer it back. Lv Up your pokemon as you fight Team Rocket and other new obsticail on your journey to be the number one pokemon trainer.

How I see the game Customize your trainer in ab exstensive custom
Pick one of 3 starters your on your way go in to the fields collect pokemon all battles look like pokemon revolution 3D

You have All the regions and Pokemon from past games to get to them you have to have badges a new DS game will let you transfer you character to the DS so you can play VA WiFi out of the house

There will be quest tourney and contest rewards very like winning level 10-15 might get you Poke repelant but winning lv 100 tourny could get you a masterball or a rare pokemon.

You can have friends travel with you I would try to make a new fighting system so 6 people on teams could fight anothert team of 6

It’s really a 3D pokemon world with thousands of people playing. It would sell millions

    What is MMO?

  • http://forums.wiinintendo.net/ SirVenom

MMO is a genre, which is further divided into MMORPGs, CORPGs, or simply MMOGs.

MMO – Massively Multiplayer Online (e.g., World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Star Wars Galaxies)

MMORPG – Massively Multiplay Role Playing Game (World of Warcraft and Star Wars Galaxies)

CORPG – Cooperative Online Role Playing Game (Guild Wars. It is every bit as Massively Online as the other games, but it is party based)

MMOG – Massively Multiplayer Online Game (Erm… can’t think of an example, maybe they don’t exist. Either way, MMOGs are (or would be) Massively Multiplayer Online Games that aren’t Role Playing Games.)
