Wii Fit Calls 10 Year Old Girl Fat, Nintendo Apologizes

Many of you may have heard about the recent case in which a ten year old girl was traumatized by being classified as overweight by Wii Fit. Her parents reportedly had to work hard to convince her that she wasn’t fat, and were very unhappy.

Nintendo recently acknowledged that Wii Fit is not as accurate for children, since a child’s BMI is much different than an adult’s.

Of course, we all know that Wii Fit doesn’t pull any punches; the first person it labeled as fat was Nintendo of America’s president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Now, this all begs the question, “How long before Jack Thompson attacks Wii Fit?”

Pretty funny. But seriously does the game actually say “you’re fat” or something more like “you’re X amount of pounds overweight”?

I am not sure… the source article implied that it flat out says “You’re Fat”, but I am not sure.

it says overweight or something like that

it says “overweight” and “obese” for the “fat” categories.

BMI (which is what WiiFit measures) isn’t really the best tool for figuring out things like proper weight. Basically, it takes your height and compares your weight to the “proper” weight you should be for your height. What it can’t take into account are things like muscle. A well built person could easily be told they are overweight due to the amount of muscle on their body. it only reads it as fat.
There really is no more accurate way for them to measure things like this without having calipers and stuff, which would obviously be impossible for them to do.
For most people, the BMI should about right, but not perfect (as long as people know that going in, it shouldn’t be a problem)

With kids, their bodies fluctuate so much that, really, its means nothing. The girl in question swims and is involved in other things, so she’s probably got some muscle on her.

To me, the BMI is just a starting point for most people and as long as you are comfortable with the way you look and feel, who cares what some talking balance board tells you?
(not to imply that I’m not interested in the game. In fact, it’s part of my summer plan)

She’s probably as round as Jigglypuff, and her parents are probably as round as Kirby after swallowing Jigglypuff.
