well, at first you could only gain speed by pushing the ski poles, but as you gain speed, just twist both your Wiimote to the right and your Nunchuk to the left and lean forward a little. That will help you gain speed, especially on the downhill parts ^^. I absolutely love this game, have all 160 stars and spams my Wii Message Board with photos from this game everytime XD

The balance board is only used for left and right movements, speed is controlled by the remote/nunchuk - turning them in the way tuck them up under your arms and...whooooosh

hm, well after a quick youtube-search, i found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZizzF8zdJMg
At about 1-minute (when he starts skiing) he do lean forward. Though later seems it's depending on the wii-mote rather than on the balance board, which would explain why it didn't work for you.

I thought so too, but it didn't seem like it. I kept trying to lean forward and/or push up on the analog stick. It appears that pushing with your ski poles is the only way to gain speed. I didn't do any tutorial though, so I may have missed something.
