On our forum a great discussion has come up; Senseless Violence in Video Games? Are gaming company’s abandon all originality for shock of value, blood lust, and perversion? or are they just pushing the Video Game envelope and aligning with other industry’s (like the film industry).

So please take part in this great discussion here.

I don’t have time to read the forum, but… no. That’s actually a pretty dumb suggestion. Look at the top games over the last year – Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, Crysis, Bioshock, GTA4, Guitar Hero 3, Metroid Prime 3, CoD4, Rock Band, Mass Effect…

IMHO, not a single one of those games goes too far over-the-top or uses gratuitous violence, gore, etc. Sure, GTA4 contains it if you want it, but it’s not essential.

The only recent change is that gaming is becoming much more of a mainstream medium. this means many more adults. Adults have adult tastes, so some games contain purely adult content. The likes of Jack Thompson like to wail and moan about “the children” but gaming is now no different to other media in terms of content (and arguably tamer in many ways).

Gaming is now like any other medium. Can you find games that are gratuitous and over-the-top? Sure. You can also find books, comics, movies, TV, animation, even painting and sculpture that’s like that. It’s usually not mainstream though and as with gaming, if you don’t like sex and violence, there’s plenty of other choices.

More adults? The average game player age is like a 25-30 year old or something! That means the majority of game players must be AT or ABOVE that age. There’s more adults playing games then kids.

I don’t think any games really have OVER THE TOP stuff. Soldier of Fortune would come closest because you could blow off limbs etc, but, it was more a comical thing then gruesome imo.

Again, “Are gaming company’s abandon all originality for shock of value, blood lust, and perversion?” is completely wrong. They design a certain game with a certain idea, and those things (which I think you should have proof read before posting) are PART of the idea, part of the game, to enhance it. The game is not based on those things. They don’t go “Oh, lets make a game, but we aren’t creative so lets just make it violence and blood”.

no gaming companies havent abandoned violence,
its just that the guys who are in charge of age rating games are getting more and more strict with banning violent games

i heard about one that was made 2-3 years ago
man talk about brutality- the only aim in the game was to kill everyone: women men and kids hell that would have been fun to play
