A problem with Japenese Brawl?

N-Sider had this to say

IGN reports that troubles Japanese players are encountering playing the recently-released Super Smash Bros. Brawl are being chalked up by Nintendo to a combination of the dual-layer disc the game is on (a rarity for Wii titles) and either dust or tobacco ash settling on the system’s optical lens.

Nintendo is offering customers affected by the problem a free cleaning if they care to bring their Wii into a service center, since there’s no way a Wii owner can clean the lens without cracking the case and voiding the warranty. Whether this will present a problem to American Wii owners and if Nintendo plans to do anything about it remains to be seen—Brawl releases stateside on March 9.

Will this happen with the U.S. game?

Hehe, I can see it now…20 years later people are picking up their game CONSOLES and blowing into them.

Yes it will happen with US brawl. Just because it’s a different country doesn’t change the filesize. It’ll still be dual-layer.

May not happen in all countries. It all depends on how much people smoke. In Japan people smoke a LOT and the air quality is much worse in Japanese cities than major North American ones.

Increased Smog + smoking probably has a much larger effect.

Why hasn’t some company made a laser lens cleaner for the Wii yet? They’d probably make a killing. All it takes is some disk with a little brush glued to it that advances the laser head to the brush. Maybe they could toss in a catchy tune or a minigame for the few minutes it takes to slowly advance the laser head.
