The rumblings about the market longevity of Wii continue to grow, with the president of the publisher of Japanese magazine Famitsu reported by ign as casting some doubt on how many one-time Wii Sports enthusiasts are still playing their consoles. He suggested two thirds of Japanese Wii owners haven’t picked up their Wiimotes recently.

He was much more confident about the longterm success of DS though, suggesting that 30 million will have been sold in Japan by 2009.

I say the Wii will still pull through, but what do y’all think?

Mario Party 8, is not for casual gamers like my wife, you have to press 'A' *ten* times to get anywere... is full of stupid and silly questions ("do you want to play with Miis or mario chars ??", "do you want this or that", etc, etc) when you get to the game, you are tired of pressing buttons)...

forget FIFA, not even close... nor interesting for *really* casual gamers...

casual gamers do not like hundreds stupid options, they like to play a little and move on...
something like play 15 min of tennis before shower.

I repeat, the ONLY fun game for casual gamers is wii sports... wii play is a nice attempt...

ppl forget how many publishers are jumping in, the Wii is full of potentials just like the ps3 ..in 2008 we will see games like ..Fatal Frame 4 , Monster Hunter 3 , No More Heroes, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, SSBB, DAY of Crisis and they are all Wii exclusive.

For the end of 07 the Wii will have games like : Guitar Hero III™: Legends of Rock, Battalion Wars™ 2, Rockstar Games Presents™ Table Tennis from Rockstar Games, Manhunt 2, Fire Emblem®: Radiant Dawn, Super Mario Galaxy, MEDAL OF HONOR HEROES™ 2, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Geometry Wars™: Galaxies, KNIGHTS, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, Bully, Zack and Wiki ...ETC

Plus WiiWare , New Wii channels plus Ds download station more Virtual Console games..

The same ppl that said the Wii will not succeed before launch are the same ppl saying the bubble will burst ..

Ppl complain about rushed games and still complain about theres no game, To make a good game takes time , If we want good games we should wait for them until they are done correctly. I think that the true test of Wii's longevity will be next Summer through Holiday. We should have some truly great games from most companies by then...as they will have had (at that point) 2 years to get a grip on the Wii's capabilities.
  • what about Mario Party 8? Isn't that also a game for casual players? Or the EA family features in FIFA, NFL...

IMO this is the problem: the wii promised to expand the user base to children, women, oldies...
but the ONLY game for them is wii sports, forget other titles, they are more oriented to non casual gamers...

so, they left their new casual gamers with only one game...
  • I don't know what they are talking about. WII has great games and the upcoming titles like Mario, Metriod, Mario Kart ect. will give the WII a boost. And still, we for example still play Sports with the family and friends. It's still fun with other people.

I won't doubt the WII's strength on the market.

Apparently, I can't post Part Two. I'll see if I can't get it up here later. It was supposed to be a list of all 22 worthwhile games that will soon be seen on the Wii.

    @Chris:

First, let me say that this "They've only had four great releases this past year" is BOLOGNA! Consider the Xbox 360's top first year releases via Metacritic:

    Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
    Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
    Call of Duty 2
    Project Gotham Racing 3
    Gears of War
    Burnout: Revenge
    Rainbow Six Vegas

How many of those games made you sit up and go "Yeah! Greatest Game Ever!"? Those are the top seven games of the 360's first year according to metacritic. It's on the level of the Wii's first year, if not worse considering all they have are four shooting games, two racers, and a first-person RPG. Compare that to Wii Year One's top games:

    Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
    Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
    Super Paper Mario
    Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
    Super Mario Strikers

Less games? Yes. More varied games? Absolutely. You have a classic Zelda adventure, a third-person shooter/adventure/survival-horror, an innovative sidescroller, an amazing first-person shooter, and a good online arcade-style sports game. Much more varied experience than 360 Year One's "Shoot, drive, shoot, maybe level up a bit...".

In all, this "weak first year" argument is bull since a gamer MUST play that same card on the Xbox 360 if they're going to play it on the Wii. No playing favorites. The 360 had a horrendously weak first year and no one ever talks about it. Stop talking about the Wii's "at least as good" first year and start looking to the future.

Oh, wait, apparently the Wii's future isn't any good in your opinion. Must I pull out my list again? Prepare for Part Two!

I haven't really played my Wii in quite some time. I did buy MP3, but once I was done with that, the Wii hasn't been turned on by me.....except for the last update. Honestly, my PC and my 360 see loads more play time. Between Halo 3, Eternal Sonata, and WoW, The Wii just kinda looks lonely. God know what'll happen once Sony gets on the ball and starts releasing decent titles. And don't say that won't happen either, look at the PS2.

P.S. My DS sees the most play time across all platforms though.....The Phantom Hourglass killz!!

I 'm also becoming increasingly more worried with Wii. The last game I bought and played was Mario Strikers, which came out like 5 months ago Since then we've had Resi 4 Wii, but that's it. And next in line is Mario Galaxy. So that means 4 "killer" games in SIX months, and one of them is a remake. That's BAD. Even at its lowpoint in games the Cube always had a thing of "yeah this month at least we have this game"-, but now? After Galaxy we have Brawl, Prime & Kart. But what about FF:CC, Distaster, Sadness, ... When are they ever coming out. Another game-drought for six months??? Considering in 3 months the 360 will only be like 40 euros more expensive than the Wii, and considering that one has TONS of killer games (even during their launch period), it's looking like a stressfull time for Nintendo. And concerning the Wii they HAVE to deliver, and they don't have lots of time.
  • Dude, don't sweat it. Just lets the tides roll in while we all surf. Those who wanna stay on land, that's fine. We'll a great time riding the waves.

LOL @ the photo. Nintendo DS to Wiimote attachment?

  • I bought the Wii and enjoyed Wii Sports with my kids on and off for 9 months. Just now I'm starting to see games coming out that really excite me. The next 6 months I expect to buy several titles and the Wii will get a second wind.

I don't care about the Wii's longevity 'cause I'll be playing SSBB, SMG, BT: 2, FE: RD, MoH: H2 and SC: L for the rest of my life :P

Though IMO the Wii will become even stronger after the holidays and even more through Q1 next year, not sure about the rest of the year but FF:CC and Disaster is good enough for me. I'm sure Nintendo has even more surprises next E3 or some news starting next year.

This is nothing more than the usual guesswork made my all the anti-casuals out in the gaming world. It's a load of bull.

As always, I say we take a look at two recent gaming devices that mirror the Wii in a way we can learn from.

First is the Nintendo DS which was at first written off as a gimmick with weaker graphics as the PSP that would lose to Sony's portable. After a few years, the DS has shown that Nintendo can easily hold off rivals in the handheld market.

The second example is the Xbox 360. How many good, top-tier games did the 360 have in it's first year? Zilch. Has it lasted as a contender for this console war? Sure has. Has anyone doubted it's chances? No. Instead, it now has several good games with more on the way that is solidifying it's strength in this console generation.

The Wii fits both of the above examples to a tee. It is being written off as a gimmick with weak graphics that won't be able to hold up to it's "more advanced" opponents and it has admittedly gone through a bit of a glut of amazing games. Now, entering the second year, the Wii is about to pick up big time. There is no reason to worry about the Wii's longevity and anyone who does is a doom-monger.

I'm not sure he's correct also ,but that's what he said so we report it.

I'm not sure if I believe those numbers or not. If there were that many people who did not play thier Wii,then I would think that this news would spread and sales would have died by now.
