Godzilla Unleashed hitting the PS2 with more playable characters (Rant) September 12, 2007
It’s still happening…
Atari just announced that the previously Nintendo exclusive, Godzilla Unleashed, is now coming to the PS2. I understand that from a business standpoint, its impossible to fault them. However, as someone who was looking forward to enjoying a title that was purportedly built with the Wii in mind, I feel let down. It feels a little bit like RE4 all over again. The Wii was the chosen platform to initially deliver on, but the definitive version won’t be on it? I know most of you could probably care less, but what are the further implications of this?
The future looks..not as bright
This kind of news implies that the PS2 will still have legs no doubt through the end of ‘08, possibly further. It’s extremely worrying as the two largest, current markets, are the PS2 and Wii. Undoubtedly, through ‘08 we will see a vast majority of titles still hitting the PS2 and Wii, instead of coming to the Wii exclusively. This means more pared down graphics, more tacked-on waggle, and more devs continually treating the Wii as a non-viable standalone platform.
That’s not to say…
Honestly, I’ve read the developers blog over at IGN, and they seem really dedicated to the title, and that’s excellent. I won’t be surprised if we see backlash in the comments there, though. I just think that an attach rate of 4:1 on the Wii, with an 11 million install base should be incentive enough to give Nintendo’s little machine-that-could the attention it deserves: undivided.

I agree I know the PS2 is still a big market ,but they should really try to make it for Wii so they can get the best results.
That’s Nintendo’s reason for making such great games so 3rd parties will follow suit.(it doesn’t seem like most are doing that)

It’s strange because if the PS3 had actually gained a better market share, the PS2 would probably be dying now…so in an odd way the PS3’s shortcomings have also hindered the Wii. argh..

Amen! Preach it, brotha’! haha Seriously, I totally agree. It’s rediculous how most 3rd parties have not began developing games that are made for the Wii and use all of its capabilities. Most seem to just be ported games with the “tacked on waggle.” Nintendo cn do it, so why don’t other developers get the hint?
…maybe because we, the consumers, are still buying their ported, waggle games.

I partly agree with the porting issue although I don’t think RE4 is a game to reference. That was a game that was created for the cube and then got ported to the Wii because it is an amazing game (even better on the Wii).
Cross platform is what every publisher is doing (even with PC, 360, and PS3) because it allows them to sell more games to more people. This is hurting all systems because it is not allowing the developers to leverage a particular systems strength. Instead they are making ‘middle road’ games that are just rehashes of older games.
To be honest IMO, the Wii is the only system that has a chance to break from this pattern. As developers see the crazy large userbase, they will begin to create truly unique games that only the Wii can do. Remember people this is still very early time for the Wii, it is still growing and it is only getting better. Bust out the shades BABY!!!

Kevbo,
Actually, I was referencing RE4’s port over to PS2 from Gamecube. Nearly all of the bonus content on RE4Wii Edition was only found on the PS2 version, NOT the gamcube. So the devs somewhat screwed over GC owners, because it was originally GC exclusive.

I hope you’re right, kevbo. I hope you’re right.

This isn’t a doom and gloom post, either, by any means. I just think that, to our advantage sometimes, devs sometimes sit up and take notice if you make some noise.

But the sadly some developers still to this day see the wii as a gimmick, even though it has surpassed all expectations. The problem doesn’t lie in whether the Ps2 or the Ps3 is still around or is successful, the problem is that developers need to take the time to actually see what the system can do. It’s like they just blow and dust off old Ps2 dev kits and use them on the Wii and hoped that no one notices.
How many times have you seen a Xbox 360 to Ps2 port, doesn’t it look alot better on the 360. But when you see a Xbox 360/Ps3 to Wii/Ps2 port the wii and ps2 versions look almost identical. They don’t even take the extra power into consideration while making these games and they just add waggle to subtitle it.
I think that once developers stop doing this and treat each system uniquely then we will see some amazing things done for the Wii.

I think that all monsters should be put in for the Godzilla unleashed ps2 version because it would be a lot better and more interesting for all Godzilla fans if I were you people who made the game I would I’m a big fan of Godzilla I like every monster I think having a Godzilla game with all monsters would great.

I am the #1 fan of Godzilla and I believe that all the Godzilla monsters on the Wii should be on the PS2 version because for the people who really love Godzilla and can’t afford the Wii because it is too much money it really isn’t fair! I admit the Wii is way more advanced but people can’t get that much money for months. Ps. I love the monster Titanosaurus! Wish he was on PS2 for people who can’t afford it. And other monsters as well!

I think that is no fair that they put more monsters for the wii than the ps2 and i think they should put all of the monsters from the wii to the ps2 to.

Isn’t the new gigan in the ps2 version?
