Word of Mouth selling Wii’s?
Yukio Futatsugi, who has worked on games like Panzer Dragoon, Phantom Dust, Blue Dragon, Lost Oddyssey and 99 Nights had the following to say regarding the Wii:
“It’s a little bit of a pity that those kinds of games (Brain Age etc) are what’s selling. I didn’t join the game industry to develop those kinds of games…The only people who buy Xbox in Japan are people who like games. Hardcore gamers…This was awesome for me, because I could focus on people who liked real games…But whenever you talk with somebody else [about Wii] and they ask you if it was fun, it was fun, so a person who hears that goes out and buys the Wii, so the hardware keeps on selling and selling…But the software isn’t selling that well, because people don’t play it any more, so they don’t buy new software any more. That’s the current situation.â€Â
Do you agree with Yukio’s statement? In my opinion, 50% of advertising is pretty much Word of Mouth, but it isn’t the only reason why Wii is a success. The software that is selling the Wii is Wii Sports, everyone wants it. In Japan, it’s what was selling Wii’s, although now it seems Wii Sports isn’t selling as well as it used to. Nintendo definitely needs to release games like Wii Music and Wii Fit fast, and that is what will help sell. On the other hand, there is definitely a cause of concern regarding software sales. They cannot simply rely on only Wii Sports-like games, and most games that top the charts end up only selling well during its first week in Japan. Hopefully Brawl and Galaxy will help change that in the country (and maybe the World! lol).
