Latest sales data has Wii overtaking the 360 August 16, 2007
The latest preliminary sales numbers for last week have the Wii overtaking the Xbox 360 in sales. If the Wii has in fact out-done the 360 sales-wise, it would be quite a feat, as Microsoft’s machine was released an entire year before Nintendo’s highly successful console.
Recent totals over at sales tracking site, VG Chartz, had the 360 with 10.43 million consoles sold, and the Wii with 10.41 million consoles sold. Adding in recent worldwide sales the Wii would hit 10.68 and would in fact surpass the 360 (10.49).
Console – Recent Total sales worldwide:
DS – 438500
Wii – 249225
PSP – 125133
PS2 – 100953
PS3 – 94431
360 – 80480
Does this call for a celebration?

Update/addition #1 (hey_suburbia)

This graph shows total console sales from the launch of the 360
The Nintendo Wii has officially sold 10,680,000 consoles in less then 9 months after it’s launch on November 19th, 2006. The Wii surpassed the Microsoft Xbox 360 (which has been on the market for a year and 9 months) and nearly tripling the PS3.
Also, the Wii has sold at rate more than doubling the Xbox 360 and PS3.

This graph aligns the launch date of each console
It’s very easy to see in the chart above the amazing sales rate of the Wii, even with the so called “game drought” and Nintendo not being able to keep up with supply do to the overwhelming demand, it has still managed to become the quickest selling current gen console and today it becomes the most sold console.
I can’t wait to see what happens when there are actually an abundance of Wii consoles on the shelves for this holiday season. Also, with some mega franchise games around the corner (Metroid, Mario, Donkey Kong) it’s looking pretty good for the big N.
Congrats Nintendo!
Here is a video of WiiNintendo at the Wii midnight release party in NYC, we were able to get our hands on the console a week earlier (November 10th, 2006), but we still wanted to be one of the first 100 or so inside to buy a Wii and join in the excitement:
