We buy them so you don’t have to – Victory Run
Welcome to the first in a series of recurring features entitled “We buy them so you don’t have to.” This feature will help you avoid wasting your precious wii points on the select group of nearly unplayable games hosted on the virtual console. The inaugural game is the turbografx-16 “classic”, Victory Run.
Victory Run
Released: 1989
Players: 1
RIYL (Recommended if you like): Outrun(x no fun)
Victory Run was one of those games that caught me in a weak moment. I figured that owning a classic racing game would be the perfect addition to my well-rounded VC library. At the time, Mario Kart 64 was still unreleased, and I was impatient. Well 600 points later…lets just say, that’s six bucks I’ll never get back.
The concept of Victory Run is simple enough. It’s a straight forward racing game that tried to set itself apart by allowing you to buy parts to keep your vehicle running smoothly. You reach a checkpoint on the road, and from there, you move onto the next section. I thought that the parts-buying aspect would make the game more enjoyable, but it’s poorly implemented. After purchasing several parts, there weren’t any kind of noticable changes to my car’s performance. I understand that it was 1989, but to be blunt, it’s a time waster.
This is a game that carries none of the fun of Sega’s Outrun, nor any of the nostalgia of Atari’s Pole Position. If you’re searching for a classic racing game to pick up on the virtual console, save your wallet the hurt on this game.

*Based on a -1 to -100 point scale. It’s opposite normal scales, as we’re dealing in negative numbers here.
-1 = Almost not bad
-100 = Seriously, this is ET-trash heap worthy
