Will Wii Sales Fade?

Latest sales figures by have shown the Nintendo Wii is now just over two million sales behind Microsoft’s Xbox 360, although launching almost one year after it, with people predicting it will soon be the number one system.

Nintendo’s best-seller sold 245,000 units last week, compared to just over 57,000 Xbox 360 consoles. PS3 shifted just under 80,000 units in the same time frame.

But Earthworm Jim creator Dave Perry has told Disposeable Media that gamers are attracted to gorgeous graphics, a factor that could limit the Wii’s long-term appeal.

“The graphical power of the 360 and PS3 are essential to them attracting the Wii’s user base. The fact is, gamers are attracted to beautiful looking games, ” Perry said.

“When a game comes out – a game like a Halo or something, something they haven’t seen before – they’ll drop everything and they’ll drop their Wii controllers when it does.”

On the topic of the PlayStation 3, Perry said: “In every way, the machine hasn’t succeeded yet in what it can deliver. I don’t think we’ve seen a true PS3 title yet, but developers are getting better and it’s only a matter of time before the PS3 starts achieving what it offers to consumers.�

    It’s dumb to say gamers are attracted to graphics. There is a small amount of truth in this statement, yet what more gamers are attracted to is gameplay. I think a large majority of gamers would rather play a game that is both fun and requires some thought, and is really addicting like Super Paper Mario over a popular XBOX360 game any day. The Wii has a really good and unique control scheme, and graphics aren’t everything.

    In fact, due to the graphics of the wii being worse I feel a lot of developers will instead spend more time into developing their games for the wii because they know that they cant just make a crappy game with wonderful graphics. Developers will need to invest more time in actually making the gameplay good, meaning many games on the wii will have far superior gameplay to other consoles games.

    I’m attracted to good graphics for sure. But Im also attracted to Innovation, and well good games. If Nintendo can at least put out games themselves with the help of 3rd parties that keep graphics up to at least wii standards, and make better innovations then that workout platform. Then the system will stay in my heart. I’m not a casual gamer, I’m a hardcore gamer. They better keep pleasing me, because don’t doubt M$ hasn’t noticed that innovation is key and has some sort of plan.

    What Dave Perry misses is that a lot of people buying the Wii aren’t gamers. Nintendo has learned that selling more consoles and games is about expanding their market. I am gamer, I think gamers matter, but “gamers” aren’t the reason the Wii is successful. I look at XBOX 360 and plan on buying one, but only as a compliment to my Wii, not as a replacement. Also Doug Perry didn’t create the character Earthworm Jim, Doug TenNapel did.

    Very good, ideas being thrown around. I sorta interpreted this article in a different. Sure he’s off base in terms of what gamers want but I do feel like he may be touching on an interesting trend. I know from seeing my father playing video games later in life that adults can get really into games like the younger crowd. Sometimes graphics do matter especially when it comes to the types of games you want to play or content you’re looking for. If new gamers are being introduced to this world by the Wii, what’s keeping them from moving onto the other consoles for something more traditional? Again this requires them to pick up the Wii so his point about numbers dwindling is lacking. MS and Sony understand that they still can bring a more hardcore audience but maybe Nintendo will eventually be bringing in new blood. That’s why it is detrimental for the company to solidify their brand and not neglect the Nintendo faithful by improving the 3rd party support. Nintendo has some of the most interesting graphics out there and that’s not saying they are realistic in anyway but that they are stylized in an aesthetically pleasing manner. There is a lot of similarly made games on the other consoles that have little to nothing on big N’s beauty let alone eye for innovation including the short lived Earthworm Jim “franchise”.
