Virtual Console Sales are Slowing Down May 1, 2007

Filed under: News, Virtual Console — shanoboy @ 5:36 am

In a recent Japanese press conference, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata mentioned that virtual console sales have began to decline despite the Wii’s exploding user base. As of the press release Nintendo reportedly sold 3.3 million games via the download service globally.

Nintendo has sold 1.5 million VC games in the first two months of the Wii’s release but only 1.8 million since the end of January this year despite shipping some 2 to 3 million more consoles in this same amount of time.

This decline in sales could mean a few different things. The initial coolness of the Virtual Console may be wearing off on consumers, or they may just feel that most of the games are a bit overpriced. Maybe Nintendo needs to start pricing the VC games a bit more competitively or even better, sell them at the same price but enhance them with new features, graphics or online play.

    Even better? Speak for yourself.

i think the price could come a tad, but its the games that are on it, i know if they put games on it like mario rpg (which would kick major ass), super mario bros. 3 (which would also kick ass), chrono trigger, & final fantasy 2&3, i would def. lighten my wallet

  • I don't use VC because of DRM. If it was not DRM then I might purchase something from there (actually still I probably wouldn't, but I would have a better chance of doing so if it was non-DRM)

ok screw these old crapy games. nintendo should make brand new games and sell them on the virtual councel duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The games available for the VC are pretty good in Europe at least but some choices make me wonder a bit, for example why release Streets of Rage instead of Streets of Rage 2 as more people seem to consider that the best in the series.

Anyway, I think the price really is the problem. In the beginning I was very interested in getting the old classics and playing them but after realizing I'm spending quite a bit on these overall, it just started to make no sense buying old games for these prices. It's not that they're THAT expensive, it's just that buying lots of them will make you feel the weight difference of your wallet.

So, what could be done? I don't think the new feature thing is really possible. They would have to gather quite a bit of resources (as in employ more people and use more money on it) to make new graphics and the such but what they could do is enable online play with friends so that your Wii thinks the person is sitting next to you and in multiplayer games you just select "2 players" or whatever. The "save state" type of feature where you can choose to go back to your Wii menu and your game will continue from the same point you left off when you play it again is quite good too. But maybe they could add a "real" save state system where you could create saves from different points of your game and load those (as in the save doesn't disappear when you load it) just like the emulators you see on the PC for the SNES for example.

Another option would be to allow you to gather "Dedication points" (yeah I know the name sucks but it's off the top of my head :)) which you get from each purchase and they can be used to reduce the prices of future games you buy. What this means is if you buy lots of games for the VC (like many of us do I'm sure) you'd get sort of discounts from them. It's a very known strategy in marketing, to keep your customers loyal to you and not to go off to the next cheapest new product you can sort of "reward" them for sticking with you.
  • Lets see what happens when Neo-Geo and MSX arrive.
  • If only the classic controller had rumble pak feature/add-on.
Another reason I'm laying off of some of 'em for a while is because I know those games will always be in the Wii Shop so I could grab 'em whenever I want. Just right now, I'm too busy with DS and Wii by themselves. When I'm bored, I'll grab something from the VC. \:D/

I haven't bought any new games on vc in a while either but I just figure you only have so much space on there so you don't want to waste it if other stuff you really want comes out later and you just filled up your channels with so-so games.

this isn't much of a surprise considering most of the games on the vc are games people didn't care about the first time around...

release most of the "classics" and they'll see increased sales. duh.
I hope Nintendo will lower the prices soon - I think they will receive much better salaries.
Defently, How many Wiis are already sold more than 6 mill. imagine if all those people that have the wii buy just 3 of the games. Or, they wanna play the other games.

I agree with DC3fanboyWii_NL: I think it's the price definateley - I am not about to spend this many bucks on games that aged a lot already. 10€ for a N64-game (which I might own already) is just too much. And I won't buy a SNES game for 8€ to try it out. There are many games I'd like to buy, but only for 4€ per N64 game and 2-3€ for SNES.

If I remember correctly you are even allowed to use ROMs if you own the original game, so, to remove the hardware from my shelves, I could just keep playing the games on my PC.

I hope Nintendo will lower the prices soon - I think they will receive much better salaries.

The sales wouldn't be slowing down if they released more games that were oft-played classics. I would love to see the following:

    Super Mario Brothers 3
    Legend of Zelda II
    Tetris
    Castlevania II
    Final Fantasy series
    Dragon Warrior series
    Ultima series

I think that the games are too expensive, I mean look at these 4 games: Legend of Zelda, The: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64 en Super Mario 64. they cost 1000 Wii point. You can only buy a Wii Points Card with 2000 Wii point and it cost € 19,95 here in the Netherlands.

This is a very interesting post and theres probably a lot of simple things that can be done to solve slowing VC downloads. Of course this comes down to price. Personally I have no qualms with buying NES games for $5 or even $10 for stellar 64 game but the rest have been mostly lackluster at best for the prices they command. Further I've noticed that if I don't get an e-mail about it or read about it online, I have no idea what's out and I may neglect to check. Maybe a weekly message with a rundown of the games would boost interest. As for improving or adding to the games, I feel they should preserve the titles as they were but update those titles already released that have lost many of their features (rumble feedback/save stats/ect)as many of us believed would be done. As for extra features the only thing that I think would be justifiable would be online capabilities. I don't want to see a different game than what I remember though.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them slowing down, as long as they are still selling at a satisfactory rate. If Nintendo were to devote resources to enhancing these games that could be going into Wii games / channel development, I don't think enough people would buy them to justify the cost. Same goes for lowering the price.
