Circuit City: Paper Mario in stock, or you get $20

We know what it’s like to buy a new game at certain chain gaming stores that will remain nameless. You walk in, ask for new release, and then get asked if you pre-ordered. As a customer, it’s a bad sign when your question is met with another question. Then you say no, and they ask why not, and you get browbeat until you drive to a big-box retailer and buy the game there. Problem solved.

The message sent is that if you don’t pre-order, we’re going to make it a hassle for you to buy the game. This isn’t an inviting proposition if you don’t like pre-ordering, and I think it’s a terrible way to run a business. I haven’t been in one of those nameless stores in months, so it hasn’t bothered me in a while. I’m bringing it up now because, while going through the Sunday ads for game deals, I kept an eye out for Super Paper Mario, which looks awesome.

I noticed the chain gaming store (gamestop) has changed all the names of their stores to GameStop in my area. This means before in my town there was a Rhino, EB Games and Gamestop and new there we’re just flooded with Gamestops. It made me realize that I think I might start steering clear of them too since they’ve practically bought all their direct competitors.

The post reminds me of yet another reason to avoid them. I hate the preorder BS sometimes, but it was nice when the Wii came out. No lines baby!

Dammit! I got there at 2:01pm and they had a box full of them, so no $20 for me. Some other guys and a couple were there for the game as well.

    Off to play, now!!

rhino is owned by gamestop too. i can’t speak for other stores but i know at my store, we ask if you had a reserve only to make sure of 2 things: 1, you get the money off that you paid, and 2, we can take the reserve out of our system. if you don’t have a reserve, we don’t care as long as we have enough of the game, we try not to hassle people about it unless we know beforehand that the game will be in short supply.

Yeah Rhino was recently aquired by Gamestop and the other companies such as Electronics Boutique, ect. have always been a part of the Gamestop brand. Think of it kinda like a Media Play/ Sam Goody’s. Likely to pick this up today where I can find a good deal on it.
