April 4, 2007 – The Wii version of Resident Evil 4 was confirmed earlier today for inclusion in the elite “Worst Kept Secrets” club as Famitsu spilled the beans on the title in its latest issue. The Famitsu report comes following the game’s appearance in retailer databases on two continents.

Titled Biohazard 4 Wii Edition in Japan (the RE series is known as Biohazard in its home country), this update promises full Wiimote support. The Wiimote is used to aim a targeting cursor in order to target and fire at your enemies. To reload, you hold down on the B trigger and shake the Wiimote. In case you were wondering, the built-in speaker is being programmed with a reload sound effect.

The Wiimote is also used for close-range attacks. When an enemy approaches, all you have to do is give the Wiimote a little of the shake-shake. The game automatically detects the direction of the enemy and makes Leon perform a knife attack. This move can also be used against trees and barrels.

The rest of the game has also been modified to take account of the Wii’s unique controller. Interactive event scenes display the Wii buttons when prompting for input. Some events require that you shake the Wiimote.

The producers of the Wii version revealed to Famitsu that one of their goals is to allow families who play the Wii together to experience Resident Evil. The game will include “Easy” and “Amateur” difficulty settings, selectable from the start, that will make aiming easier and keep your life from depleting too fast.

Even if you’re a RE pro, you’ll probably want to take a look at the Wii version, especially if you didn’t try out the PS2 version of the game. All the bonus elements that made it into the PS2 version are being included in the Wii release. That includes the “The Another Order” sequence, where you play as Ada.

And on top of all that is a first look at Umbrella Chronicles! A trailer for the first original Wii entry in the Resident Evil series (be sure and check out our separate preview) will be included with RE4 Wii Edition.

RE4 is set for Japanese Wii release on 5/31. While it hasn’t officially been announced outside of Japan yet, its appearance in retailer databases late last week suggests that Wii players everywhere will get to experience this Capcom classic through a new control scheme.

Awesome, its final! I cant wait to be shootin up some zombies with my wii-mote!

  • well, im definatley getting this-it will make the wait for umbrella chronicles seem a lil shorter, and this game is just freakin awesome!!

Yeah I passed on RE4 when it originally it and have always wanted to play it. I'll be getting this on the Wii when it hits.
  • AJ
Well, if I were to buy a "remake", it will be this one. I never got the GCN version and have said no to all "ports", but his one should be fun, especially with the Wiimote. I'll also get Umbrella Chronicles.

Yeah Umbrella Chronicles isn't your normal RE game though, it seems a bit like those Time Crisis shooters but with some new extra elements. If they do it right it could be an amazing game, if not then it still might be fun to play but over quite fast and not as deep as some of the others regarding gameplay and the environment.

The RE4 release on the Wii is a bit uninteresting though. I'm not one to really "re-buy" old hardware (Nintendo DS -> Nintendo DS Lite) or software unless it has something significantly unique added like Link To The Past had on the GBA (play your favorite SNES game when you travel!). The added gimmick of using the Wii's strange controls on RE4 isn't really worth it unless they really do sell it at a much lower price. And I don't think some short PS2 extras will make it worth it.

Then again, RE4 is, in my opinion, one of the greatest games ever made and sales show that it was very liked so of course they'll release it on the PS2 (which they did) and now Wii to get everything out of it. For those who never played RE4 though (are there any??) this is your chance. :)

    You're right, JB.

    1. Almost everyone including their mom already own the Gamecube version and
    2. the Gamecube version is 20 bucks new. I'm sure this version will be at least 40.

Unless if they redid some of the game, it could be a possible buy, but it doesn't look so. And there is another Resident Evil coming out. It is basically a first-person rail shooter called Umbrella Chronicles.
  • dood, your really late, resident evil:umbrella Chronicles is coming out this year, do some research before you start going off!

What's better than a Resident Evil 4 remake on the Wii? Oh, I don't know... How about a freakin' new Resident Evil? The Wii is on its way to outsell the 360, and it has decimated the PS3, but the developers keep screwing us with these type of games? Sorry if I'm being rude, but I'm just tired of hearing that there are so few good games being developed for the Wii even after it has become the fastest selling system ever. It makes no sense!
