When will we see Earthbound?

The Legendary EARTHBOUND

Many fans of the cult classic Earthbound (Mother 2 in Japan) are desperately awaiting the, erm, unique game’s debut on the Virtual Console.

Chances are, many of you have heard of it, and some of you have played it. And if you played it, you likely became part of the most obsessive game fanbase ever.

It was one of the first games mentioned in the announcement of the Virtual Console itself, to the joy of the fans of the game. But, now, four months after launch we have still seen no sign of it. It hasn’t even been confirmed to actually be released on the VC.

On Wikipedia one can find a list of Virtual Console games and confirmed future releases, and Earthbound is nowhere to be seen. See for yourself here.

Of course, we know that it will be on EVENTUALLY, but when? One theory could be a surprise launch this June, the month of its North American debut, or this August, the month of its Japanese debut. Or there could be no reason at all, although I do think that this game would get more downloads than Tennis or Ice Hockey…

When it does launch on the VC, the big N may keep an eye on the downloads. Perhaps enough downloads could convince Nintendo that releasing its sequel (Mother 3, GBA, Japan only) in the States wouldn’t be such a bad idea…

At any rate, we will have to wait awhile before smashing New Age Retro Hippies and Annoying Old Party Men on the Wii.

This is the perfect game for the VC. It not only was a cult favorite but a game that not very many people were able to get their hands on. I’m tired of seeing people argue about what uber games should come to the VC. Is that what we want it for. Half the time when they get what they want they end up saying I already have 5 or 6 versions of this game. I don’t think I want to buy it (well obviously). Why don’t we want to see 5 star hard to find games getting priority over titles like Zelda or the Kart series? That’s what I really want to play and I would get 10 times more bang for my buck out of them instead of never playing them again after a half hour of nostalgia.
I loved playing this game last year via cpu emulator(sorry Nintendo) but I’d be glad to shell out for it when it hits the VC.

I think its interesting that you said the game could coincide with the original release. I think this would dissolve a lot of the bickering over the random releases if they did a “this week in history” launch for future titles.

i would love to see this on the vc, i never owned it as a kid so all i have is the little bit i played on a rom version of it.

and you do know that information on wikipedia is not always accurate, right? i’m sure nintendo would have a better place to announce upcoming games than wikipedia

Yes, I considered making a note of it on the article, but decided that such a comment would be useless. The page is updated according to available info by several people, and any incorrect info is quickly/immediately weeded out.

Yes, I have already payed again for games I already have, like Toejam and Earl, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (I didn’t feel the need to download the other Zelda games since I already have them on a Gamecube disk).

I think that they need to pay more attention to uploading games that we will actually WANT to download. I understand that if all of the top titles were released at the same time, the interest in the shop channel would die quickly and the lesser-known titles would be passed by. But, they could at least release one of the higher rating games every two weeks and I might shell out some more cash…

That’s cool SirVenom, I know I have one game on VC that I own in another form. I guess my point was that the VC should be a little more interesting IMHO than a best games of all time list. Simply said, I have a better time playing games that I’ve only heard about being great than ones I’ve beaten 5 or 10 times. As the largest gaming demographic I also think that a lot of us would like to see older games taking priority one for nostalgia and two because a lot of us probably no longer own the games. This can also benefit younger gamers as they’ve never even played any of these games let alone remember the NES in its heyday. I’m surprised we haven’t seen some of the more notorious RPG’s on the NES and SNES. Not just FF series but dragon quest or Ultima. I’d really like to see some more variety in developers if anything instead of just Nintendo titles. Of course this is all probably just licensing issues.

Nintendo should get the lead out and release this. I am so ready to download this game so I can erase sirver pencils and erasers, so I can see the new age retro hippie again, and so I can delve into the game’s unique sense of humor.

I aiso believe it should be released for Virtual Console, as far as I know it was a great game of it’s time. I never owned or played it, but I’ve heard alot about it and I love it. I hope Nintendo does release it.

They’re going to end up releasing this as a full game with extras for $40+ because they know Earthbound fans will buy it.

Sorry to be off topic, but I like your posts and I wanted some feedback for my blog. I have a hard time writing, but I do want to share my experiences. Am I stuck between a rock and a hard place? Or should I just do it?
