Changes to the Mii Channel and a Fresh Wii Channel Announced March 12, 2007

More Mii
It’s been reported that at the Game Developers Conference Shigeru Miyamoto very quickly announced that a new Wii channel will launch April 23rd. Unfortunately that date is only relevant to Japan and no other details were given on a North American release date or specific details on the channel.

At the conference Mr. Miyamoto also touched on the evolution of the Mii channel and the Wii hoping that someday Wii owners will be able to do much more than just send messages to each other and that perhaps the Wii will become the next big social networking tool competing with the likes of My Space and of course Sony’s new Home feature that is to be released soon on the PS3.

Does this mean that we can expect to see much more customizable Miis in the near future? It will be interesting to see Nintendo balance adding more Mii features while keeping the process of making Miis easy and fun, which has probably helped make them so appealing and fun to so many people.

Its possible these announcements are in response to the development of the Home feature soon to be launched by Sony (which was probably developed in response to the Mii channel to begin with). In fact, the new Wii channel announced might be directly focused on competing with the new Sony Home feature (or possibly the video chat channel mentioned in the last post). Watching all these new features unravel will be exciting.

Will Sony make the Home feature over detailed and therefore overly difficult to the point that it only catches on with a dedicated group of gamers? Will Nintendo over complicate the Mii channel taking its appeal away from its new non-traditional gamer base? I don’t know but I can’t wait to find out.

  • I want to see Mii's with clothes, and costumes.

Yeah that would be a great explaination of why the title was delayed. Hoping the unmentioned channel will be this demo channel everyones been clamoring about.
  • We must have more games that'll feature our Miis.
I'm hoping Mario Party 8 will let us choose our Miis as our characters.

I'm just excited to see what new features we'll be seeing. Competing against MySpace will be a major challenge.

If they start doing a chatting system, it's gonna be like the online chatting communities such as Unichat or Gaia Online, and I forget what that European one was.

Nintendo's going gung ho with the appeal of their Mii's. They've announced commercials featuring Mii's as well as the asian gentlemen house guests they've been showing. So far I've read about two concepts where the Mii's are in a board room and the other where the Mii's are in a living room. This could get interesting as the war has expanded to creative innovation beyond gaming. Maybe the culmination will be seen as these figures become more prominent in the games seen in Wii Sports.
