“Wiip!” Open Source Wii Modchip Announced February 12, 2007

People at TCNiSO seem to be in development of another Wii Modchip, this time being open source. This chip is advertised to be a cheap microcontroller that exploits the Wii backdoors to trick it into playing normal backup disks (the same method of the previous three chips).
In the website, they say that the chip will be Open Source (as a main feature), so the user is able to download PCB Schematics, Firmware, and mainly, the Chip’s code. They say this was made so that users can make change to the code so it can be easily updated by anyone, and so to be able to get new features from all the programmers out there.
As quoted from the website, these are the CURRENT features of the chip:
-Actually upgradeable! Device is bundled with an easy to use programming cable.
-20 MHz AVR microcontroller with 2KB of EEPROM (SMD type)
-Customizable (via open source code)
-Boots Wii games (DVD+R / DVD-R media)
-Boots GC games and homebrew
-AudioFix (naturally)
-On board DIP switch (enable/disable mod, enable/disable stealth)
-Works on DMS / D2A chipsets (sorry, we haven’t worked on D2B yet)
It seems that this chip is in advanced development, since it’s expected to start shipping in February 27th. In the website it says that the chip will be available at their Online Shop shortly, for 20$ (shipping included), or if you’re a little advanced, you will download Schematics, Code and Software for free, so you can make your own for less than 10$…
This may seem like a victory for the Open Source community, and if this chip is releases soon, it could be direct competition for the WiiKey, because of this one’s lower price, and updatable code, so someday it could run other regions’ backups.
More news will be posted when they appear. Be ware.
