Nintendo CEO: Wii to Surpass Xbox 360

takahashiSpeaking to Dean Takahashi during D.I.C.E., the president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America revealed he anticipates the Nintendo Wii will surpass the installed base of the Xbox 360 with the current sales rate.

The question is when,” Reggie Fils-Aime said. “That’s going to be driven by our own sales rate and getting good software released at the right time. It’s clear they are slowing down. It’s not unthinkable to see that next year we could surpass their installed base.

The Nintendo Wii has enjoyed excellent sales since launch. In Japan, Nintendo sold a total 1.4 million units of the Wii, while Sony has managed to sell 614,000 units. At this sales rate, Nintendo will soon have with the Wii three times the installed base of Sony’s PlayStation 3.

I’ve been paying attention to the charts @ http://www.VGCharts.org
It looks like the Wii is about half-way to XBox and almost 3 times the PS3 sales.
    360 (about 13.5 months)
    Wii (2.5 months)
    PS3 (2.5 months)

    I do believe it’ll surpass the XBox 360 sales within a year’s time comparsion. I have faith. :D /

I think it will surpass them too.

The Wii will need a few things (which I think it has).

A great game coming out every two months for the next year. With Metroid, Mario Party, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Super Paper Mario,Battalion Wars 2, Mario Galaxy, Manhunt 2, and (Another Rockstar game, Fight Night???). I think it’s well on it’s way.

They’ll also need another “non-gamer” hit like Wii Sports. Nintendo is coming out with “The Wii Health Pack”, “Line Rider” and ” Wii Motor Sports Airplane”, so I think that’ll help out that demographic.

suburbia, i think they need more than that, the wii needs to get some decent online play, i know pokemon will be the first, and i really hope it is out before metroid, but they need to get 3rd party developers in on it too, and yes i do know they got the online dev kits (btw fight night is ea’s boxing sim, not rockstar)

Well, so far we’re already seeing big titles for every month. This month we saw WarioWare, this week we see Wii Play. Sonic and SSX Blur later this month. Manhunt 2 and Mario Party 8 supposedly next month, then Super Paper Mario. Those titles mentioned above are well-scheduled for a certain month of the year to keep the hype of Wii up, for this’ll be one of the best years for Nintendo we see for a long time.
2008 may start bombing with a major 3rd-party titles.

It seems that the PS3 is getting off to the same start that the Xbox360 did, piling up on store shelves. I remember 2 to 3 months after the Xbox360 was released, seeing piles of them in almost every store that carried them. I remember walking into the stores and seeing the piles of Xbox360s collecting dust. What I saw in the stores was different from what I was reading online. Sites were saying how well the 360s were selling, evidently they meant how well Microsoft was selling 360s to stores, and not to actual consumers. Yes, the sales have picked up for the Xbox360, but it took it almost a year. The Wii has sold half, in 2.5 months, what it took Microsoft to sell of the Xbox360 in a year.
