NOA’s Perrin Kaplan discusses Wii

Perrin KaplanIn a recent interview with Gamespy, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Marketing and Corproate Affairs, Perrin Kaplan, gave some insight into Nintendo’s views on the state of the Wii and its successful launch, as well as what to expect in the future.

“It’s been fantastic. We’re in awe that consumers have embraced it so readily, and that such a wide audience has embraced it, from core gamers to their grandmas. That’s pretty cool, and really hard to achieve with any product.”

In regards to the Playstation 3: “Well, we didn’t have anyone in line that got shot waiting for our system. So there’s one sign of the different approaches between our two companies.”

Perrin feels that the Wii has succeeded in outselling its rival by way of its “Blue Ocean” strategy – attempting to appeal to the mainstream, rather than just the core gamer.

“I think that there were really two different audiences. The core gamer probably went out and tried to purchase both systems. I think Sony’s efforts were in trying to get the core gamer to accept and adopt it, which for them in the PS2 era, spread to the mass consumer. I think we were just really prepared.”

Perrin’s response in regards to online play remains optimistic, but noncommittal. “Worldwide online play is a priority for Nintendo and you will see it. Our system had a lot of complex new components to it. I think if we had just taken the whole package, here are all the channels, here are all the online games, here are the Miis, the news, the weather, I just think it would have overloaded the mass consumer.”

As much as I love the Wii, I think that’s an unfair comparison between Nintendo and Sony. Someone could have gotten shot waiting in line for a Wii just as easily, or an Elmo doll, or even getting gas at a gas station. I don’t even really understand what she’s referring to there… product availability?

It attracts individuals that are less-likely to hold a weapon or commit crimes. A friendly product for the friendly consumer, as in the mainstream market; those who are familiar with iPods or Motorola RAZRs.

While on the other hand, PlayStation 3 attracts the hardcore gamers who are most likely to be FPS (First-Person Shooting) gamers; meaning they may be carrying a weapon with them.

And if it was serious Roth, please get your head straightened out. Don’t let Jack Thompson brainwash you. Metroid Prime is a FPS.

Well, I’m just gonna leave that last post of mine neutral ’cause it could either be true or not, it’s up to the reader if they want to believe the theory. Yeah, Metroid Prime is a FPS, but that’s only just 1 title or handful compared to the other major FPS on the other consoles.

For that last paragraph in this article, I assume she’s referring to the Nintendo and Nexon MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) conjunction function. get DOWN get FUNKY~! :D /
