Wii’ve not got the power captain! February 9, 2007

Filed under: News — boggie @ 4:52 pm

In a recent inteview with Shacknews Epic Games have said that they were planning to bring The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to the Wii, but there is just not enough guts in the system to support it.

Just like the announcement that Unreal 3 won’t be coming to the Wii as it cannot cope with the engine. It’s sad news for Wii gamers but it begs the question that was it a good idea not to beef up the Wii a bit more?

I am sure we would not have minded playing another $100 or so for something with a bit of juice.

obliv Wiive not got the power captain!

The Wii already has slight ability to work with Second Life... unfortunately, this ability is only a chat window... but I am still hoping there is a way to get it in full on the Wii.

OMG O.O Dang, I wanted to see it done. I would spend the extra money for an expansion pak, nintendo wouldn't make a premium system that costs more and turn out looking like microsoft and sony. I have a 360 (BEFORE WII WAS AVAILABLE, I'M NO TRAITOR!) and some of the "graphicly" nice things in oblivion, could've been removed without anyone caring too much.they made extream detail to the parts of the buildings that when you got close you could see the detail, but you don't need it on the second story, because you'll never be able to jump that high, unless you cheat on a PC. I think that some of the people in charge of checking if they could transfer it weren't trying hard enough. I've seen huge games have their graphics reduced so they could be on a handheld! NOTE: oblivion on PSP, Mario64 on the DS. It can be done, sure it won't look as good, but I would gladly sacrifice some graphics capabilities, so I can swing the sword my own style in the game instead of having my character swing it the same way every third swing. Moving this around would be more precise also, and you probably wouldn't accidentally steal the little jar off the counter in front of the shopkeeper, just to get your head crushed in or an arm hacked off. There is so much potential and so many solutions here, WTF is wrong? look at me I'm babbling on again...ever play second life? I'd love to see Second Life capability on the wii. IM me on Second life some time, the name's Delta Klata. ^.^

I definitely would have minded another $100 dollars. I like the performance just fine and certainly wouldn't have been able to justify the purchase at $350.

Bought Oblivion the day it came out here in the UK, bought the collectors edition too, must have played like 5 hours max and though it was utter pants compared to Morrowind. Felt to much like a simplified console version of a PC game. So im not bothered at all if it never makes it to wii.

Ok so let me get this straight The wii can't support Oblivion but a PSP can. Everyone there's something there not telling.

I wouldn't have wanted a Wii for $350. If you want to play the ports with great graphics, you can buy a Xbox for $400, and give up the wiimote.

well then make a wii expansion harddrive to connect via usb and there u go! then devolopers would have more to work with
  • If Nintendo took your suggestion and raised the price to $350, it definitely would not be as appealing to a wider audience.

@Genjeta: Twilight Princess doesn't have better graphics than Oblivion. I can see if you are talking a 48oi screen of Oblivion compared to a 480i screen of Twilight Princess, then the graphics don't look much worse. But I do agree that it could be done. TP isn't that much worse in the same 480 resolution, unless if the engine is meant for 720p or 1080p, I don't know.

I think there will be a new Wii, instead of a 'expansion pak'.

About Oblivion, well, I don't really care, we have Guitar Hero and Rockstar on Wii, Oblivion may come with the time, when the Wii has its own Unreal Engine 3 [They are working on that].

This begs the question, how long until there is a wii "Expansion Pak"?

Oh well. Nintendo couldn't have predicted just how big this would be, so hindsight is 20/20. If they'd put it out for 350, but beefier, it might not have gotten as many impulse buys. Nobody saw 40 year old mothers waiting for hours in line to buy this for themselves. y'know? Maybe down the road they could introduce a more recent chipset or something, perhaps a premium system, say... in black?
  • Lets wait til the next metroid prime hits the wii and see if we're still saying that the Wii can't produce some nice graphics. I read that it will be awesome.
  • I thought it could handle the unreal engine, but they weren't focusing on it.

    Mark Rein:

"One of our licensees has been porting it [UE3], and they might be successful at that, and that would be great if they do it. It's doable, but not something that we're going to focus on."

Rein says that it's doable, and that someone is doing it. Epic just isn't going to focus on it themselves, since they're not making any Wii games.

I don't get it...why wouldn't it work, Oblivion isn't THAT graphically enhanced. Twilight Princess has just as good graphics, if not better.
  • Brandon
Yeah, I would definitly pay a little extra money to buy an upgrade chip (or something like that) if it means unreal and oblivion... :(
  • *Sorry about the grammar, I'm on my Wii, if that's a good excuse*
  • IAgree about the extra cas, for us regular to hardcore gamers... But the rest of N's target audience may feel differently. And if the Wii had two versions, well, I'd be pissed.
