Nintendo to offer original game downloads for Wii

gaming channel

During an interview with Game Informer, Hudson Entertainment’s director of marketing, John Lee, was asked if Hudson plans to release any original content through the Virtual Console, Lee responded: “Well, the VC was specifically designed to bring back classic games, not to introduce new content. So to answer your question specifically: No.

“However, in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer.”

CVG contacted Nintendo and was told this:

“Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service.”

“We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop.”

So, it looks like the rumors are true. Look out for the “Game Channel” in the future. Hopefully this leads to a “demo” area as well, where you can try out new Wii game demos.

What about arcade versions of old Nintendo games – Donkey Kong, DK Jr, etc?

    ‘Virtual Arcade’, anyone?

They only guff I have about this is the fact that there is only 512MB (from what I understand) in internal memory, and the SD card is only used for “backup” purposes. How the heck are they supposed to release downloadable content for long on a system that only allows 512MB of space??

    > You hook up a USB stick to the back, maybe even a portable harddrive. But it may work as how the SD card does.

Anyway, I think this may be how we will be able to play original amateur games like Line Rider and whatnot. Don’t even have to leave home when you can get a new title in just a few minutes.

Space Issue: USB hardrive, or update so you can run content directly off of the SD card.

Aside from that, This is what I’ve been waiting for. The Wii is finally looking like it will live up to it’s MASSIVE potential. As A side note, I want the Wii play “Tanks” game to be released on the “game channel” as a stand alone, with a hundred or so single player levels, and Online multiplayer.
